Was there a smell off the calf at all, as in, he may have been dead a day or two? That's one of the causes of the placenta slipping.

My vet told me it happens sometimes when the calf is presented wrong coming into the cows pelvis. The calf cant get out and dies when the placents detaches because its blood cant get oxygen from the mother. The afterbirth then comes out and it may be the first time the farmer sees the cow sick to calve
