    Hi all,

I am thinking about ordering a vagcom cable from flea bay. (the ones for about £20). I have a 2004 1.8 octavia vrs and my question is will they work with my car? ie will i be able to read the codes?

I should point out that its only for code reading, code clearing would be a bonus.

    TIA,

    Bop.

Yes it should work fine once you either have the VAG-COM or VCDS software.

Do you have a link to the one you're ordering? I'm thinking about getting one myself.

    Thanks

at the moment no, i put in a search for vagcom obdii and narrow it down to UK and ireland sellers and it throws up about 200 different options.

Adverts.ie have them fro $35 to $45 euro. even with delivery and conversion to sterling flea bay comes in for half their prices.

    From the Ad
You can also view live data and change basic settings as well as codings and adaptions.

Not sure if you can do that with the shareware version to be honest.

A couple of things to be careful of: third party cables may not work on newer cars. I've had mixed results with a third party cable and ended up buying the official Ross-Tech one last year.

Also the shareware version only allows limited functionality - you have to pay $99 for a licence to use the full functionality with a third-party cable. Data logging is iffy as hell on the USB ones too. Here's a full comparison of the functionality: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html

Is a cable, laptop and scanner a different proposition completely or will this work?
I got a maxiscan like this http://amzn.to/zfnhUd and it seems to work fine with my Skoda ('07 petrol). I got it to check engine code on a toyota. It worked fine for that and I tried it on the skoda where it seemed to run fine.

Saw Ed on Wheeler Dealers using same one :)

IIRC that device can only read and clear codes. VCDS is an advanced diagnostic platform for VAG cars. It'll read and clear codes, data logging, module recoding, etc. Have a read through the Ross Tech website.
