Battery, battery connection, dodgy earth connection, starter motor, starter motor wiring. All possibilities.

Low battery is a common cause of that. Or problem starter.

If you put on the headlights, a bad battery connection will cause the lights to go out completely when you try to start it.

A low battery will cause them to severely dip in brightness.

If they stay as bright as normal without dipping, its likey a problem with the starter motor or the connections to it.

I have noticed previously when lights are turned on then engine is turned the lights do dip in brightness was happening a lot on sunday evening when the car was stationary.

What would be the best course of action to take?

.......What would be the best course of action to take?

Get someone with jump leads and try start it. If it starts you need a new battery. If not then your starter needs looking at.

Hit the starter sharply with the jack handle.

That used to work on my Kangoo.

Starter motors and battery connections are the plague of renaults .
    The battery connections are screw-ons
Loosen them and cheak for corrosion .
" make sure you know ur radio code too"
As this will go off .
Also the code in the key for the Imobilizer gives a lot of trouble . Make sure the imobiliser red ligh goes out .
If your hearing a clicking it's proably d starter

If it's not "turning over" at all, while being jumped, I would expect it's a problem with the starter motor.

As mentioned previous, also check the immobiliser is switched off.

Also, if it is the starter, you should be able to start the van using the push-start (rather than a jump).

who much roughly would the starter cost to repair?

who much roughly would the starter cost to repair?

I haven't had one repaired in ages
It used to be around €60
EBay do them for around 70€ but another 30€ for post because there so heavy .
Breakers yard should be around 40€ but your taking the chance on it being 100%.

A good auto factors would be the way to go .
Plus cheak is yours a 1.9 d or the 1.5 dci version . The starters might be different
