    Hiya,

I'm thinking of applying for a job and the working hours were described as the following in the advert..

The employment shall be on a 39 hour seven day week basis and will require
a shift working pattern between the hours of 8am to 5.30pm on Saturdays
with hours 4pm to 12.00 midnight on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday. A shift-allowance will be payable.

Can someone please explain what this actually means?

    Thanks

You would work the following days and hours each week:

    Tuesday - 16:00 - 00:00 - 8 hours
    Wednesday - 16:00 - 00:00 - 8 hours
    Thursday - 16:00 - 00:00 - 8 hours
    Friday - 16:00 - 00:00 - 8 hours
    Saturday - 08:00 - 17:30 - 9.5 hours

That totals 41.5 hours over each seven day period but that includes your lunch breaks so presumably you only get 30 mins break per shift, leaving you with 39 hours total. I think!

Basically the 39 hours will be spread over 7 days between 8am and 12 midnight. You can expect extra pay (eg 25%) per hour for hours accrued after a specific time (usually 5 or 6 pm).

The shift pay may not be per hour after a certain time but a total % of salary. So if job is 30K a year, you could get 25% extra on top of that. That's my experience with shift - flat rate % on salary
