More RAM for my macbook

I bought my macbook back in late 2008.

I have it running 4GB RAM but this is just not enough anymore.

The page outs are running at 1.88GB and Swap used is 1.22GB

Crucial says that the max I can put in is 4GB. Has anyone ever put more RAM in than was allowed? I would love to put 6GB or 8GB ram into the system to make it run better.

I would generally use my laptop for photo editing and web design.

Also the kernal_task is eating over 300MB which seems quite extreme

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

I would trust Crucial here. they normally push it to the max, but if they say 4GB, I'd believe them.

First thing I'd do is a clean install.:D

I put 8GB into my wife's late 2008 aluminium Macbook last week and it worked fine. If it only sees 6GB then you need a firmware upgrade of some sort.

    Agreed with Spuncy.

I have 8GB in a unibody Macbook late 2008. If the macbook only sees 6GB you need to do a firmware upgrade (via software update)

Ordered RAM from these guys, great service

It should be grand to install 8GB but you will need to install a firmware update for reading of the full amount of RAM. I'd order from memoryc.ie if I were you, their RAM is cheap and the service is brilliant.

    Thanks for the replies.

I should have clarified that my macbook is the white one which came out before the unibody MacBooks. It was one of the 2.1 ghz Intel Core 2Duo MacBooks, with the white casing but NOT unibody

A couple of years ago I upgraded my 2006 MacBook 2.1 to 2 GB using Crucial's scanner.
I'm intrigued that OWC say I can install 4GB and utilise 3GB.
Would this need a firmware upgrade and, if so, how do you do it.
    Thanks.

I have been using 4gb for last 2 years with no problems,or firmware update that i know of:D. Had 2gb in and was getting random crashes rang mac repairer here and they wanted 150 to estimate repair quoting 800 for faulty motherboard. Sent to states it was faulty ram (apple were going to replace but shop i bought in didn't use apple ram so they wouldn't replace) but did replace cracked keyboard FOC and fixed again in Apple belfast FOC.:D
