Dropping out of postgrad before grant arrives.

    Hi All,

I have searched high and low for an answer to my question in vain so here goes.

I have recently dropped out of a postgrad for which I have applied for a grant. However the grant has not come through yet.

I have contacted the college who have advised that I will need to pay half the fees for this year (which I haven't paid yet as I was waiting for the grant).

My question is, if I contact my local authority now and tell them I have dropped out will they cancel the application entirely and leave me to pay the fees myself? Or, should I wait until it comes through and then cancel it so that the grant will cover half of the fees due?

Also, if that is the case what if I just don't pay them? what happens then? would this affect me applying to another course in a different university?

Any help in this regard would be appreciated,

    Thanks in advance!

Also, I do not plan on applying for another grant in the future so don't care about those implications. I just don't want to be left with a 4,500k bill for a course I dropped out of after 4 months!

I imagine the county council would probably cancel the application. The minute your grant comes in, the college will just send the cheque straight back to the council saying you're no longer a registered student. So it would seem that it will be you who has to pay the fees. However, because you did half of the course, you could make a case for being entitled to getting your first instalment and half fees paid. Depends on how nice your county council are (if you had a good enough reason for dropping out they might do it).

I don't know what would happen if you didn't pay your fees, although I imagine they probably wouldn't forget about four and a half grand.

Thanks for that, I actually spoke to a really helpful chap in the fees and grants office who told me that they still could bill the council for the fees for the first semester. Hopefully that will work out, I'm not bothered about the actual cheques at this stage.
