    Hi Guys

I have a Peugeot 406 HDI 2.0 that has been through the NCT and failed a smoke test on Smoke 7.350 /m based on 3.00 /m

The car has generally been used for zipping about and short runs with no real long runs at all. Would it be a case of giving it a good run up the road to get it good and hot for the test before hand, or would you be looking at a Lambda sensor or the like for it?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Start by cleaning your egr valve out anyway.

    Cheers.

Just looking at the report there, and it says that the flexible brake lines in the front are perished and need to be replaced, which is an easy fix

There's an imbalance of 42% between the N/S and O/S front axle. Would it be a wise decision to replace both shocks on the front, or just the one that's faulty?

It says Nearside is 65mm and the Offside is 38mm. I take it its the Nearside shock that's failed. Is the Nearside the Passenger side?

Never ever change the just one shock before the nct you have to change both. You would only change one if u were between tests, flexi pipes ul be grand just make sure the joiner from the metal pipe isn't corroded into it.seems common enough these days can take a fair bit to get it removed then

Are you sure the valve is malfunctioning at all? Its not that hard to pull off the egr it'self and give it a blast out with carb cleaner although just cleaning does not guarantee that it will be fixed. The most probable reason that the valve could cause emission problems is if it is stuck in a closed position and thus preventing the recirculation of exhaust gasses.
To check for this, get another to start the car while you put your hand around the brass pipe leading from the egr valve. Get them to rev the engine to 1500 revs immediately and keep it there for 10/ 15 secs. If the brass pipe heats up or gets warm then its opening.
If you hav'nt cleaned the egr valve on this car then i would recommend you do it anyway, its fully mechanical (no electronics) and it only takes two bolts and a clip on the brass pipe to remove it.

Before you start, first make sure that the air filter is clean and that the timing (cam belt) is correct. After that you can get onto the other suggestions.

    Burst intercooler pipe.
    Open egr valve.
Maybe a maf sensor covered in oil giving trouble.
    Can be lots of things.

Get the car scanned first of all.
