Which coat would you choose?

I'm buying a new overcoat soon, but I find that I'm caught between two. I was leaning towards this one but I've been told that it's more of an old person's look.

I think it's a nice coat and I kind of had my heart set on it, but then my friend showed me this lil beauty which I quite like. He said that it is a more contemporary look and that it would better suit my style of fashion (which is sort of neo-victorian/dandy).

What do the people of boards think, which coat would you think would suit a man in his early twenties?

The Crombie is much more versatile and looks a hell of a lot better - its actually quite a nice coat, is on trend and also fits your dandy aspirations.

The second coat is more for black ties dress wear and can only be worn with a cravat and a monocle...

They're both gorgeous, OP, but the armani is an evening jacket- hence the sink shawl lapel. Not really appropriate for everyday wear. I'd definitely go for the 1st coat over the 2nd, if it's for general wear.

As for your age- I think the 1st is a classic, not 'old person', whereas the 2nd one has the potential to make you look old beyond your years. Fine if you're in black tie and you want to look a bit older, but in general, I'd say the 2nd will age you, and age badly itself- yes it's contemporary, but tbh that's not always a good thing. Spending that much money on a coat you can really only wear in 1 1/2 seasons per year that will look weird next season is a bad idea. A double breasted wool overcoat will never really go out of fashion.

    Just my 2c.

Totally agree, the second one is kind of ott. Looks like something the concierge of a 5* hotel would wear- or that fella that stands at the door of Brown Thomas.

The 1st one is a much better staple for your wardrobe. They are both really expensive so you'd want to be sure you're going to wear the one you pick and although the first one is a bit dearer, I do think you'd get more wear out of it.

I would pick the first one rather than the second one. I think it is classic and that it would date.

The other one is lovely but would not as suitable for all occassions as the other one.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.

The Crombie was my initial preference but my friend, who is a fashionable guy, sort of threw a spanner in the works by suggesting that it was an older man's look. I think the distinction made here, that it's a classic look rather than an older person's, is bang on.

I going to order it and book it in for a dry cleaning too since I'll probably blow my load over it as soon as I unpackage it!

I think the Armani one is horrendous. It looks like an Oscar night version of a Matrix coat!

Definitely the Crombie. It'd suit a stylish man of any age.

Echoing everyone else - the first!

Neither, that neck strap kills the first one makes it look like something out of river island, the second is ugly.
Wouldn't consider either dandy the cuts don't look right at all.
If your spending that type of money id be looking at Burberry London or wait until next year and pick up something better from Mr Porter.

You think so? I have to say I'm not overly fond of the strap either, can't see myself using it ever so it is basically just in the way and it doesn't add anything to the look.

Yikes, wouldn't go near Burberry myself, their stuff doesn't really catch my eye at all and looks sort of bent.

Neck strap is just plain ugly, no need for it at all ruins the coat IMO. Ask them if its removable ? It looks quite boxy the fit though. It's like epaulets stuck on everything these days, although i dont mind them so much on trenches.

Bent:confused: They have 3 different labels, Brit (Tacky), London (tailored line) and Prorsum (high End). The London stuff IMO is very good majority of the time, clean lines and cut really well better than the two you mentioned easily.

DEFINITELY the first one, as mentioned its a classic. My reaction on the second one was similar to this .....:D Fashionable or not its horrendous sorry.

Might be removable, but I don't think it ruins the coat, sure it's only a lil strapon. It doesn't have epaulettes. I like the fit, looks nice I think.

Ah yeah I've seen their stuff, it's not to my taste.

My OH has likes his winter coats - the first one is definitely the one I would choose. Last season, we saw lovely coats in that style from D&G in BT. I wouldn't consider it an old man's coat at all. In fact I'd consider it quite stylish. Look at Ted Baker as well - some of their coats are cut quite nicely.

The second coat is something a gothy Twilight-obsessed teenager would wear.

First one definitely. Really don't like second one.

Well if you like it that's really all that matters. I'm just saying you could do an awful lot better if your spending a few bob, your into designer territory there so there are a lot of options. Not much left anywhere at this stage but if your not in a rush wait for AW12.

    Definitely the first one!

The Armani one is waaaaay too dressy:)

Out of the two, the first one is definitely the nicest and the one you'll get the most wear out of. It's a beautiful coat.

Except, I agree about the neck strap unfortunately. It ruins the coat and would turn what would be a purchase for me to a pass.

I'd take padi's advice, save your money and buy a nice spring/summer trench and then when AW12 comes around, pick up a nice classic overcoat sans the neck strap.

The Crombie coat is my choice between the two. It's classic, not old fashioned.

I actually like the little strap detail, I think this makes it more modern and younger than the average wool coat you'll see. But then, I love little details like this in clothing so I am biased. :D
