Currently diving a 745d and have finally bent work into agreeing to pay for petrol in a petrol car as we've closed the German office my mileage will be limited to around town and weekend excursions.
Had been offered a health enough trade in on 09 750i but having recently become healthy (reduced cigarette intake to 15 a day from 40) and started cycling again I was considering an X5.
Is there a new one on its way or is the current model here for much longer?
I'm not too keen on the styling of the current model to be honest!

the current E70 is due to be replaced soon with the F something.

    Not due till 2014 though.

Damn it to hell so by 2014 the term V8 and SUV won't exist in the same sentence.
Testing a BMW X5 xDrive 50i mSport later (bit of a mouthful) and a low mileage 48i on Friday now

    not on these shores anyway!
I had the 4.4 V8 in my E53. Had the 4.6is too for a few weeks, that was a beast!

Personally if going for the X5 I'd stick with the diesel, it's very well suited.

I'm guessing that the OP doesn't live in this country so won't be stung anything like as much for tax and buying a car with a "large" engine as would be the case here.

Personally I'd have the 7 series every time over an X5, either way I'd be having the petrol, especially if the company was paying for it:)! Why would you want a car that is slower, uglier and just worse in every area bar space?

Also, an X5 diesel will be slow compared to a 745d!

errm, because as the OP says, he needs the space.

I'd like the space not that there is much more it is just more accessible in the X5 putting skis into the 7 really limits boot space and put a muddy bike in a car would interfere with my OCD cleanliness
I don't live in Ireland so tax isn't an issue (it's chf700 or thereabouts).
And as I don't pay for fuel or any BIK petrol is what I'm after. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the way the 7 piles on speed but in Switzerland speed is at most a cruise controlled 125km/h the great advantage to the 45d was you could do insane speeds on the autobahn and not have to constantly refuel.
Has anyone experiences the twin turbo V8 50i? On paper it's fast but a NA V8 seems more 'natural' in a way

Drove the saloon the boss had one the gearbox is a tragedy unfortunately because the rest of the drive train is remarkable the noise and the feel is uncanny but driving in start stop traffic it lurches and jolts like a 17 year old. I would go far as to say we will never see such an engine in a road car again.
Thinking of combi's now maybe I'll switch to the dark side of German autos and take a gander at an RS6 avant they are very popular here

The X5 is manky. Just get the 750iL and a bike rack for the back! Problem solved.

I was in one too, relative has bought it a few weeks back. I asked him about this lurchy gearbox story and he told me he never experienced it and reminded me that in full "auto" mode (outside of SMG overrides) its pretty much like an Automatic in traffic. In the test drive he gave me it seemed fine. He tested 3 or 4 before buying his one.

So I dunno if what you are saying is "normal" at all.

The problem with the SMG is that it isn't an auto. I found parking and setting off a nightmare I couldn't judge the clutch engaging and the whole thing was just frustrating.
The E60 M5 was missing two things IMO
    1.) A 90L tank
    2.) A 6sp manual with a clutch

I do a lot of driving around town an auto is my preference the city traffic is a nightmare and you've to move quickly into gaps and turning lanes. Couple that with lots of tunnels 30km/h zones and speed cameras and an SMG M5 is a pain!

Could be due to a setting maybe? Like if the gearbox was in the same setting as would be used when you press the M button? That way it would be more aggressive. Or as you say, it may be faulty. But you can set them up a multitude of ways.
I know in manual cars like the Z4M, the gearbox and clutch are rather unfriendly around town.

This is a tough dilemma alright... Do I want that V8 or this V8..:D

Something like an E63 AMG estate with a standard autobox would do the trick I'd say

I would just love to see a new 750iL with a bike rack on it. That would be living well.

    Proper first world problems!
It sounds odd but large engines cars are ten a penny here. It's odd that with the limits imposed people will by 4000+cc cars in a country you simply can't use them in!
    Regularly see 4.2 A6's 545i 550i E500 XC90 V8's and the like.
The E63 is far too pricy they cost CHF100k plus I'm not spending that kind of money I started looking at the 40,000km 750i and they're running CHF65,000 odd and I'll have CHF20k for my own which is quite good given its mileage.
An 80km RS6 is about CHF65 as well.
An X5 is also in that realm.
Which is how the dilemma arises!

Oddly enough, the car was available with a manual gearbox, but in the US only.

The new M5 will also be available with a manual from the outset, but again it's a US only special. The 550i is also available with a manual for the Americans too.

Was aware of that alright and I also believe they fixed the dsc off button so that it actually turned the bloody thing off (initial power train warranty claim concerns).
The new 550i is quite temting but again too pricey in comparison to a lightly used 7!
I'd hazard a guess the lack of manual in Europe is either demand or c02 emissions led which is a shame!
This is looking like an S6/RS6 v X5 4.8i/50i toss up.
Or give it all up and buy a 550i touring and save te extra outlay for a summer play thing!
