    Hi Folks,

I on the look out for a new family car (still have 3 months before I decide) anyway unsure what to get for two babies and one teen.

I really, really dont want a standard MPV so was looking at Mondeo Estates, and they are huge, even the wife was impressed with the size of the Hatchback boot.

I've seen this one in Enniskillen, but the motor tax is confusing me.

    http://www.drewbaxtercars.com/detail.php?794

The Reg is a 57, but he has it listed as a 2008. Anyone know what tax base it fall into, Engine Size or Co2?

    Thanks

Are the babies both in child seats? If so, it'll be very uncomfortable for a teen sitting between them. Re the tax/VRT - it'll be on the CO2-based system.

Dealer has it listed as a 2008 car so VRT is on CO2, and annual motor tax will be CO2 based also.

Maybe call the dealer to confirm month and year of first registration.

Ya both babies are in car seats. I found the back seats to be very wide. Saying that I haven't tested with car seats yet.

Just rang the dealer there, and yes it's 2008 so Co2 based. How does the UK number plates work? Is 57 from June 2007 to June 2008 or something?

    Thanks

    57 is from 1 September 2007 to 289 February 2008

57 plate is from the 1st September 2007 to the end of Feb 2008.

Emissions on the one linked are coming back as 156g according to cartell, so it's 24% VRT and €481 a year to tax. The 1.8TDCi 125ps engine is also not the best for power delivery, not bad once it gets going, but takes a while for the power to kick in.

VRT is Co2 based for every car regardless of year.

The way you worded your sentence makes it sound like its only c02 based because the car is an 08.

    agh right, fair enough.
The OP was confused so it was easier to break down into 2 :
    1. VRT = CO2 based
    2. Motor Tax = CO2 based

If he was looking at a 2007 car, i would of worded it as such :
    1. VRT = CO2 based
    2. Motor Tax = CC based

kceire, you seem to know about this stuff so quick question. If i bought a car in the north which was first registered in Sept '07, a 57 reg, it would be re-registered in the republic as a 2008 and the VRT/Motor tax based on emissions. Is that correct ?

No. If it's an 07 its an 07. VRT is Co2, tax CC.

No, it would be regd as an 07 cause it was registered in 07, it goes by date of registration, not the reg plate
You could have two 57 regs, but depending on the month they were registered in they would have different motor tax once imported.

As the lads have already said, its a 2007 car so :

    VRT = CO2 based
    Motor Tax = CC Based

Feckin huuuuuuge load area, but doesn't feel too big when you are driving it. Last one I drove was a 100ps LX Estate and it was fine.

I'd echo the sentiments about sticking a teenager in between 2 child seats though, might be a bit of a squeeze.

Have a 2L petrol zetec for a few months now. Really think its a great car spacious and very to good drive. Boot is huge I can fit my racing bike in boot only taking the front wheel off.

Have two children myself in child seats. One group 1/2 babyseat and group 2/3 highback booster both are isofix. Only occasionally use the middle seat sister in law can sit between them reasonably comfortably but she is tiny. Myself I would only squeeze between them for a short trip and I'm not exactly large at 175cm and 67kg. Have a non isofix highback booster that is narrower and doesn't have to go so close to the middle of the car giving a nice bit more space. So I reckon with the right two child seats an adult could sit between or with one of the seats in the middle. That probably isn't a compromise I would make though as I chose my seats based on what were shown in tests to be safest not on size.

You may need to go down the route of getting a car with 3 dedicated seats instead of the 2.5 found in most cars. The only one that still looks like a car I can think of is the Peugeot 308 estate after that your in to mini mpvs like the Ford C-Max, Renault Scenic and then on to 7 seaters like Ford S-Max, Citroen C4 Picasso, Opel Zafira. If I have to go that route when I need to start ferrying school friends around it would probably be the S-max as it's one of the few that doesn't look like a bus. That is something I will avoid as long as possible though.

If you are going for the mondeo though I would consider the hatchback as well there are a lot more around so you should pick one up cheaper the boot is all but as big as the estate. I really like my estate and I regularly carry bikes so need the extra height but if I hadn't I could have got a titanium x hatchback for nearly the same price as my zetec estate.

This looks like a good deal considering when you factor in flights for UK cars.

Any thoughts on the car or anyone deal with the dealer. Seemed nice enough and very up front on the phone.

    Thanks

The tax on a 57 reg (Sept 07 -March 08) would be cc based as it is pre the July 2008 change in tax

You can go on the co2 rates for the first half of 08 too if its cheaper.
