KIA sportage 2006 diesel fuel consumption

Can anyone offer me assistance. I have a 2006 KIA sportage diesel 4x4 and lately it's drinking diesel like no mans business! I'm not one for mpg etc but I'm putting fuel in to beat the band. Last week I put €20 (at 150.9 per litre) in and drove to Mullingar which is about 50 miles and when I got down there I needed to add fuel again. It is due a service but does anyone think it may be something else? CANNOT afford to run it at the minute at these prices!!

    Any help appreciated

Have a full and comprehensive service done on it. If the air filter element is clogged, it could be just 1 cause. Tyre air pressures need to be checked too. Is the boot full of sh1t. Is the aircon always on?

Boot does have buggies in it most of the time but tyres normally at 33psi. I booked one of those deals online for advance pitstop for oil and filter service the other day. Wouldn't have the money for a full service unfortunately. Not these days anyway :(

Was going to be smart about 4x4 mpg until I did the calculation, you're doing less than 17mpg so there is definitely something wrong.

A full service is mostly oil and filters anyway, not servicing it will cost you in the long run. Is it down on power or smoky? Any funny wear patterns on the tyres or is the steering heavy (not sure how the Sportage transmission works, not locked it in 4x4 have you?)

None of the above man. Power still ok, no smoke. Only had it in 4x4 when we had the bad snow. Never speed. I do city drive mostly but it should give me more return for my money shouldn't it?!

Just seems really bad lately. I'm only noticing it because the fuel is more expensive and I'm topping up more often!

I drive a Defender at well over 2 tons and get 26-27mpg, you should be doing better than that! Get the fuel and air filter changed and see if it makes any difference. If not, go to a diesel specialist or a Kia mechanic (do they use Mazda components?), you could have something like a failed MAF sensor which may actually make it go better but it will guzzle diesel.
