    Hi all,

I am looking for guidance please if you can give it, what are the rules & obligations around Public showings of TV feeds.

In particular i am talking about the coming 2012 Euro championships, i understand with any copyrighted materials royalties need to be paid when showing films, docs etc in public, but what about an RTE feed & it being international football?

I am thinking that RTE need to be informmed & they woould set the fee, but with it being international football & it being broadcast into all European networks where does the royalty apply if it even does?

It think it's IMRO http://www.imro.ie/content/online-licensing who handle it.
Plus a TV license is still needed.

What sort of public place is it you are thinking of?

You have to pay IMRO and TV licence as a minimum.

Balcony Theatre in mountmellick community centre,

I have used it for showing films in the past but i am not sure about royalties due for a football tournament that will be europe wide on most TV providers.

Think it's safe enough if it is a match that you are showing from RTE and the signal is unaltered even if you plan to charge an admission to the venue. As already mentioned you need your licence and royalties boxed off.

However, show any pay TV content especially Sky without a commercial sub and you'll be crucified.

Ok thanks for the info, so to summarise wiith a few questions,

    1. I need to contact IMRO Re: the royalties due definitley?
    2. Will my own personal TV license be sufficient to cover the brodcast?
    3. What do you mean by the signal being 'unaltered'?
    4. You mention above about admission fee, does this affect the royalty?, i know it doesnt for films.

The TV licence is for a particular premises, any number of TVs, even bedsits if they have no kitchen. A different location or a sub part of premises with its own kitchenette needs its own TV licence.

ANY music or TV of ANY sort in Public area or workplace needs IMRO payments.

Really? Where? For sure you can't show a DVD purchased in Tesco and charge admission.

You're probably best off consulting a solicitor. We can't really give legal advice on Boards.ie.

Correct! You need to have a licence from the MPLC.ie for showing commercially released movies (and other content).

RTE is provided free to air so I can see no impediment to charging admission to watch a TV set. However, as already pointed out you do need a TV licence for the premises that it is located in. You can't transfer your licence temporarily!

What I mean by unaltered is sticking your own ads in or around the content.

It wasnt you who mentioned admission, and i wasnt referencing any old DVD, you need to agree licence with a distributer & have whatever film supplied by them (see below)

Cheers, the main distributer for film licensing in irealnd i use is GFD, (which i have used to date)

    http://www.gfd.ie/filmlibrary.php

Just if your interested in showing films in the future.

Thanks everyone for your help, i will contact IMRO & the TV license dept, hopefully have it all sorted for the football finals & have a full theatre.;)

Didn't think that GFD were still about. I thought they only supplied movies on actual film and demand had vanished. They've moved with the times!
