VOIP Skype in Ireland

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can answer my question... I am American living in the US, my mother-in-law is in Kilkenny. Last time we went visited we brought her a laptop so we could Skype with her, and she could "see" her grandchildren. We got her a Vodafone dongle, pay as you go, since she is older and will not be using the internet that frequently. We could never get Skype to work, like other posts on here, the video got scrambled after about 10 seconds. I have heard they blocked Skype. I am wondering if this is still the case, and also if anyone knows of any other pay as you go companies that will allow access to Skype. Thanks so much!

You need real fixed broadband for Skype, especially to the States. It's not the speed, it's the latency, which on mobile is high and unsuitable for Voip

In order to get Skype or any VoIP working with a Vodafone dongle you need to get a data add-on.

This costs an extra €19.99 and is only available on a bill pay contract.

I have tested this recently as i wanted to use VoIP via my dongle and was also experiencing a drop after about 5 seconds.

Once the data add-on was enabled the call / video quality was perfect

I have also tested 3 which does work out of the box with Skype and VoIP but you can run into serious quality issues during peak times so it can be a hit or a miss

Forget dongles. They are useless, period. If she's in Kilkenny she can likely get UPC cable broadband. More or less the same money but a far more satisfactory experience.

While I agree completely with previous posters about the suitability of dongles for VOIP when compared to fixed broadband, I would point out that there are people who are successfully using such dongles for VOIP.
It is not impossible; if you 'happen' to be in a suitable area it can work satisfactorily.

That I think answers the OPs question ....... but the advice would be a fixed broadband connection for best results.

It may just about work locally here in Ireland, but not to the USA. Pingtimes at best to the USA are ~110ms, on mobile it would be twice that or more, much too high for sucessful Voip.
