Transatlantic - visiting researcher

I'm currently looking into Ph.D programmes on both sides of the Atlantic, as my research topic has a comparative element.

Has anyone here got any experience of being a visiting researcher in the US?
Or vice versa - being a visiting researcher in Ireland while doing a Ph.D in a US university?

It's not easy to find info on programme websites. Does it depend on institutional or departmental links? Or could a student find an institution on their own?

Would be grateful for any info.

Mods, I'm not sure if this is better here or in the Postgraduates section. Feel free to move if this is not really suitable here.
