With the new law forcing everyone to pay a tv license fee ive started wondering is it time to get rid of rte. I mean considering the utter ****e they've been producing and the fact that its monopoly greatly hurts independant radio and tv stations isnt it about time we scrap/privatise it?

Getting rid of everything that they show on a Sunday evening/night would be a start.

Yes and replace it with a low budget basic news service.

How many more RTE threads do we need?

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

If they get rid of RTE we'd still have to pay the licence fee...

I presume your joking about that but on a serious note is it still ok for RTE to show the angelus, I think at this stage they should be stopped from doing it, what do other people think?

We shouldn't get rid of RTE no.

    Why?

Over 90% of the licence fee goes to RTE!

    Get rid of? No.

Bleach, rinse out with boiling water, put in the washing machine at 60 then a good tumble dry? Yes.

Do you honestly think the government would give up any sort of income if expenditure went down? While we're on %, what % of car tax goes on roads? Where does gun licence money go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Niles

RTÉ may not be perfect, but in my view they're still miles ahead of TV3 - RTÉ would never show crap like Talafornia. To be honest, I think it's a pity that RTÉ weren't given the go-ahead for their entertainment channel (guess who objected).

If I had the choice I'd get rid of TV3, half the stuff is the same as ITV anyway, would it really be missed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,619 ✭✭✭ilovesleep

Yes absolutely. We're in a deep recession and getting deeper and deeper. Many people are looking at ways to reduce their bills and outgoings and changing tv habits is one way therefore elementing the need to pay for a tv license fee.

There will now be a broadcasting charge applied to computers and phones whether or not you have the internet and whether or not you can even view tv on your devices. Making it nearly impossible to avoid the charge.

RTE is an inefficient organisation paying it's 'stars' over inflated paypacks. Instead of sorting the mess within the establishment, the government wants us - the nation - to stump up the cash to go towards paying RTE.

Get rid of it. Or reform it if you can't.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,619 ✭✭✭ilovesleep

But preferably get rid of it

I'm sure they would invent another tax -they all ready are good at it.

Yep. Agree 100%. It would serve two purposes.

    1. Give everyone a chance to give that 50 year-old gravy train the two fingers if they wish.

    2. Bring RTE into the real world.

PS why isn't there a poll option?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,809 ✭✭✭✭smash

Where's the poll? I want to set up a load of new accounts and keep voting yes!

Yes, TV3 are doing such a stellar job we really don't need a second broadcaster any more.

Let's see how RTE would do operating under the same real-world financial constraints. Without TRIPLE incomes.

It should be "gotten rid of" in terms of removing it from being a mandatory burden of the taxpayer and public. There is no value in RTE, their self-produced content is utter tripe and they rely on bought in programmes from the US, which are available on Sky channels already. A lot watch RTE but a lot also do not, so those who don't should not bear the brunt for it particularly when RTE already receive revenue from advertisement sales.

It should be relegated to being a subscription service and survive on the back of these subscriptions + ad revenue, or close. Of course, that would mean massive cuts to the pay of the "celebrities" in RTE and probably a move from Donnybrook to somewhere else on the outskirts, which of course would be far too much to expect from people with such talent ;)

I think RAW is the only decent show out of RTE.

    EVER.

Versus other programmes it wouldn't be so good but for RTE it's impressive! I have to admit though, I mainly watch it because I fancy JoJo's voice :o

Like them or not, but look at the measly amount of cash TG4 get and what they can with it. RTÉ is a disgrace.

That's like pointing out the best looking fat chick! Just because it's miles better than TV3 doesn't make it any way watchable.

    RTE should be privatised

Then those that do want it can pay for it and those that dont wont have to

47 out of the top 50 most watched programs on Irish TV over the past year were broadcast on RTE.

So far the best idea here has been to bleech, rinse, wash on a 60 and tumble dry the whole outfit.

They're clearly producing more quality programming that a lot of people enjoy more than TV3 (whether you agree or not is neither here nor there, the figures show it), but definately needs a shake up and to bring in some new talent and spend their licence fee a LOT better than they already do, if they're going to insist on keeping so much of it

factor in how many people watch british tv and u'll realise not many people spend much time watching irish tv

That wasn't my point. My point was, people are on here saying get rid of rte, tv3 is much better, when clearly it isn't, going by what the figures say. I

'm not saying RTE is perfect, and yes they've a leg up with licence fee, but they're obviously doing something right at the same time.

All TV3 seem to be doing is putting out low budget panel shows, with cheep digital sets that give presenters and guests funny shaped heads
