Gurgling noise from hot press

Last night and tonight there was an awful lot of noise from the tank in the hot press, goes on for about 20-30 seconds before it cuts out.
I'm using coal on an open fire with a back boiler, house also has oil-fired central heating but house is 30+ years old (not sure when central heating was added) I went around and checked the hot water at the taps, it seems to be very hot and as the hottest water starts to come out, it'll spit out for a few seconds. The tank in the hot press seems to be very hot as well.

Any ideas what the gurgling noise could be? It has the sh*ts put in me:mad:

Sounds like it overheated, there should be a pipestat at the cylinder, what does it read ?

I can't see one on the cylinder, or the pipes immediately next to it. It's still very hot after running a fair bit of water out of taps for a while.

Is it a big deal if it overheats? What was the noise?

If it overheated, the noise was the water boiling and heading up through the vent pipe to the expansion tank, you should have a pipe stat that picks up the temp of the water from your coal back boiler and when it does sence its hot it switches the pump on and the heat is taken into the rads, if your boiling up then you may have an issue with a pipestat or pump.

As I said, it's a fairly old house and the central heating was plumbed in after it was built. I can't find a way to turn on the water pump to circulate the hot water through the radiators without turning on the oil burner.

Just let the coal fire die down and investigate it tomorrow, you may just have a switch to turn on the pump, you should have a seperate pump for your back boiler, find that and follow back the cable.
