    Chain oil or two stroke?

I bought 5L of chain oil in my local Husky dealer last week for €18. They gave a free 1l bottle of 2 stroke oil with it. Thought it was a good deal with the price of oil at the moment.

I bought this chain lubrication oil and have had no problems with it. I think it is much better for your health to breath in vegetable oil rather than a mineral oil (the chain oil is vaporised or aerosoled), as well as the obvious benefits to the environment by not spreading a mineral oil everywhere. The way I put it to my customers is that would they prefer me to spread a can of 3in1 over their garden or some vegetable oil that will biodegrade away. I wouldnt do that to my own garden or woodlands would you?

I contacted their local supplier and he dropped in a 5 gallon drum outside my shed on his way to somewhere else. The cost was above the cost of a good chain lube oil, but worth it in my opinion.

If its 2 stroke I use a sthil 50 to 1 mix, again less pollution and I find it very good for the saws, Sthil too.

Have to Agree with oldtree! Chain oil is full of nasty chemicals, i use sunflower oil! Its a clean pure oil, cheap, enviromentally friendlyand good for the user! its thinner than chain oil though, so the oil pump will need adjusting!
As for fuel, i have been using Aspen, its the new fuel from Husqvarna. While not as cheap as petrol, the difference is unreal. Saw is running much better, and throath and head are not sore after a day of using it compared to petrol!
    Its defo worth the price!

Husqvarna dealers stock it and I think its almost 4 euro a liter. I dont know what its made from .
Its to expensive for me anyway, I have never used it for this reason. It keeps aswell which is why I would use it if it were not so dam expensive. I use husqvarnas own brand two stroke and the saw seems to run better with it.

It should be available from any husqvarna dealership; I was introduced to it at the Husqvarna area at the ploughing!
Em it a benzene free fuel, pretty much the purest fuel, premixed, it around 4 - 5 euro a litre I think at the minute. It comes as a Aspen 2(2stroke engines) and Aspen 4(4 stroke engines) It’s quite expensive but I’m sure in bulk it would be a lot cheaper, plus the saving on health benefits! It’s well worth reading into, especially if you’re using the saw day in and day out, you will know what I mend about the sore throat, and you feel less fatigue than you normally do, well in my case anyway.

Have a look at the link, and if you can buy a liter, do, you will notice the difference!
It also can be left in the tank with out corrosion of piston rings ect, so if you have a saw that you dont use to often, or
    hedge cutters ect.

It's for chain oil I am asking. I see some one on done deal who is selling 5 litres for €10 but tbh I think that's a bit high!

I think that's a good price if it's quality bar oil. I go through a lot and normally buy it from Finol in crumlin ,http://www.finol.ie/about.htm works out about €40 for a20l barrel when I buy 60 l. I also use sunflower oil quite a bit if I'm working in a sensitive area. Found the veg oil not so good.
Aspen is great stuff once you can get your saws running well on it, v expensive but what price can you put on your health.the difference running it when your in a tight enclosed space is unbelievable. There's very few suppliers as yet but as said, husqy dealers can get it for you. Last time I checked, Liffey distributers had some http://www.husqvarna.com/ie/ treecare Ireland in Carlow stocks it too.http://www.treecareireland.com/

checked the dealers from that link and there is one in castlebar, great can't wait to try the aspen.

have also used the husqvarna 2 stroke oil and found it to be as good as the sthil, and the husqvarna bottle is great for measuring out amounts with.

Old tree, there is also a test aspen showed us at the show, put petrol in one glass jar, and aspen in another, drop styrofoam into both, and watch what happens to the styrofoam in the petrol. when you see you will be shocked at what it is possibly doing to your insides!

Its a brilliant new feul and concept, as lets face it in the industry we breath in fumes all day, so if its benificial to our health ya cant price that!:D

Always looking to improve my situation inside overgrown lleylandii that have to be topped or come down, can get very stuffy in there! can wait to try it and a few quid aint going to kill me but the fumes from petrol mixed with a 2 stroke oil might.

    Hi Oldtree,
Ya manage to get your hands on aspen yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,109 ✭✭✭Oldtree

I started using Aspen last year and DEFINITELY won't be going back to mixing my own fuel!! Bit more expensive alright but since I only use the saw occasionally it works way better for me, don't have to worry about cleaning out the engine when its been sitting for a while!

Got my tub of aspen and cant wait to try it out. What with that and my bio vegi chain lube oil, I'm a now a lean green cutting machine ;)

    Some of the bumph:

reduce environmental impact of harmful hydrocarbons by 99%

    I'd buy that for a $ :D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,109 ✭✭✭Oldtree

and biodegradable two strke oil in the aspen too, lovely

Glad you found some Aspen, Oldtree.Them lleylandii will be so much better;) They'll still rip your arms though:D:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,109 ✭✭✭Oldtree

I always wear a long sleeved cotton t shirt under another short sleeved t shirt and that seems to act as a bit of a buffer for the arms. ;) and dosn't get too hot, well absorbs the sweat anyway.

My local hardware shop tried to charge me €28.99 for 5litres of chain oil. And when I suggested there might be a mistake I was shot down! I left with a red face and no oil. My question is, where should I buy my chain oil? There is a husky dealer not too far away, is that the cheapest place? I'm not in the industry but I do a fair share of work with my saw.
    Thanks,
    G

Its not cheap anywhere but for 5 liters I would not pay any more than 20 euros. Have a look in the nearest motor factors or garden center. Husqvarna dealer is going to be just as expensive as any other place, maybe more.
I have not done this yet but I plan to use recycled gear oil(ep 80-90) next time I need to get some.

If you live anywhere near Co Carlow, there is a place that advertises 5 litres of chainsaw oil for €14 on done deal. I think the last time I got 5 litres in my local husqvarna dealer in County Kildare, it was about €15- €16, but that was about a year ago. If you post which county your in you might get someone to recommend a place locally. Definitely don't pay €28.99 or anywhere close to it, that's just madness.

Would small filings and wear dust in gear oil not make muck of your saw?

I would filter it first. I have a 20 liter drum full of the stuff and the recycling yard up the road want 5 euro to take it so Im going to try it anyway. It may not be sticky enough and just spray all over the place though we will see.

Used oil has health problems associated with it ie carcinogenic , on a quick search see this:

    http://www.donegalnow.com/sp/article_manager/detail/epa_warning_on_burning_waste_oil

will do a bit more research for you later

We used to use general burnt oil on a saw when cutting birch out of a bog used to cut into the bog and around the roots saved having loads of stumps left. it was on an old bar and chain so wear wasn't too much of an issue but wouldn't use it for general cutting tho.

    :eek::eek::eek:

    From Environment Agency UK publication:

How to find out if waste oil and wastes that contain oil are hazardous A guide to the Hazardous Waste Regulations Reference number HWR08 Version 3.1 – June 2007

Used engine oil is considered to be a category 2 carcinogen

There are more details of other oils here too.

    search "waste oil" here:
