Hi. Hope ye can help. Since i upgraded to my iMac to Lion a few months ago i have to manually connect to my wireless network. I have also upgraded my MBP to Lion and it automatically connects to the same network every time. The setting on both machines are the same and dont know how to fix the problem. Can anyone tell me how to rectify this. Thanks in advance

Have/ can you do a clean install of Lion? Have you set the iMac with a static IP (change it to auto).

Try manually forgetting the network and then reconnecting to it, go Network preferences > advanced > clicking on the network > press the minus sign on the bottom left (make sure it's on the top of the list)

Seems to be a very common issue with Lion, particularly with upgrades from Snow leopard. Make sure you've installed the latest system update and try this fix. That should hopefully sort ye. :)

Yeah, the dropped WiFi after waking from sleep seems to be a bug. I've been plagued with it on my MBA. There are a few temporary fixes out there, but none of them seem to work for long. It will hopefully get sorted in the next update.

Try the fix in the link in my last post SD, it works for many. It certainly worked for me with my wifi issues on my Lion partition. Went from right pain in the bum, to zero dropped wifi waking from sleep since. :) worth a punt anyway.

Thanks, Wibbs, but the above fix isn't really applicable to me as I use a manual IP. I've an old AEBS which isn't able to handle multiple DHCP devices without crashing.

Deleting my network connection and recreating it a while ago really helped the Wi-Fi dropping issue, but it still occurs. I have one of the new Airs which are particularly prone to the problem. It doesn't appear to happen on my MBP.

For the record, this tip sorted out my wife’s laptop - 2007 MBP which I’d updated to Lion ages ago, when it was mine. There were no problems, until I added her user account from a Time Machine backup (from her old 2006 MacBook, also upgraded to Lion ages ago without any issues).

At the beginning, she had to reconnect to the network manually after waking the machine, until I edited the locations. Now it reconnects every time.

It was, and still is, on a static private IP address, BTW.

I recently purchased an iMac and have had problems with wifi being dropped. I contacted Apple support and they tried a few fixes but nothing worked. Turns out this problem has been around since 2009 which is a long time. So computer goes back to PC world tomorrow and if the tech guys there can't sort it i will be looking for money back

It hasn't been around since 2009, but various other unrelated wifi problems have. There's no one-size-fits-all solution to these kind of network issues as they may be due to any number of factors which can be difficult to narrow down.

Does this happen when waking from sleep, or at any time?

For me the the Wifi drops after a couple of minutes of inactivity.
I took the iMac back to PC world as it is under warranty and i had read about all the similar problems people were having. They hooked it upto their network and there was no problems maintaining a connection.
So they suggested the problem was with my router (zxyel 660hw t3) so i called eircom and they checked it out and guess what? they suggested the problem was with Apple. I have all the current software and updates from Apple.
So now i am stuck in no-mans land without stable wifi. So i am going to borrow a few different routers from friends to see if any of those work.

I got the same router when my previous one (the netopia one) died, I couldn't get a stable connection with any of my devices (3 PCs, PS3, hadn't got my iMac at the time), this was particularly noticeable with iTunes sharing or using ssh or remote desktop between the computers, gamers have also reported serious issues with this router (search the Eircom forum on here, there are loads of threads about it). I replaced it with another Netopia that a friend no longer needed and it has sorted the iTunes, ssh, RDP and PS3 issues. You might also find from the Eircom forum that, despite the numerous complaints about the router, they won't acknowledge it.

My iMac however, does have it's own WiFi issues, which seem to relate to it detecting the different bands (b/g/n) as different APs with the same SID and switching between them. Applying the WiFi fix from Software Update seemed to fix this for me for a week or so, but it is as bad as ever again. I have thought about getting another router but the problem hasn't annoyed me sufficiently to shell out just yet!! If you find one that does work, I would appreciate recommendations.

Last night i took off the WPA ecryption from the router for a while and i was able to maintain a connection o.k. Obviously this is not a secure soloution but at least now know my computer isn't the problem

I'd also appreciate any router recommendations. My wifi stalls roughly every 5mins or so (on a rare occasion i may get up to 30mins trouble free), and I have to manually disconnect and re-connect.
I have my Macbook running beside it with Snow Leopard with no such problems.

Try setting up open DNS it won't hurt either way. Solved the problem on 1 of mine http://rickbeckman.org/how-to-set-up-opendns-on-os-x-lion/ The other 3 are wired I gave up just couldn't sort the wifi problems.
