Time to trade up

So, the other half is expecting our first bundle of joy this june so its time to trade up from my 3 door corolla.
I've come on here to get the advice from the experts.
I'll trade in the toyota. Its a 2004 1.4l petrol with 70000km on the clock. I've got about 6000-7000 euro to spend on top. I've got conditions for the new car We want.
It must be an economical diesel, preferably after 2008. Thats a no brainer as I've started covering about 500-600 miles a week with work.
Comfort and space are a must. Need 5 doors for the baby seat.
Really after that its the usual thing. Reliability, decent mileage etc.
The advice I need is what am I looking at regarding trade in price and what car I'll get for my budget abd conditions.
Also, would it worth my while going to the UK and bringing a car back and paying VRT? Would I be looking at getting a more marquee name.
Hope some of you can help as myself and the wife are anythingbbut petrolheads!

You'd probably scrape a 5 door UK model 08 Avensis D-4D for your budget
Great value in Vauxhall Vectra CDTI hatchbacks too.

Seat Altea XL 1.9 TDI worth a look too, higher driving position, 5 seats and HUUUGE boot.

Wonder does that price include VRT?

That's nearly as much mileage as in on my 11 year old diesel.

    Look in the background.

Also a Zetec 140 Powershift isn't your typical Irish spec.

Thanks for the replies guys. Great help. Heard great things about Mondeos but have to admit I've heard very little about the Altea.

Buying something like a 08 Mondeo, 08 Passat etc with over 100k mile for 12k plus is crazy stuff.

With you doing 600 miles it will be worth peanuts in no time.

30k miles a year is alot and will make a car worthless in a few years. That's almost sales rep milage.

I know this sounds bad, but I would honestly get a trusted motor like a 01-02 1.8 diesel Mondeo, 1.9 tdi Passat, Octavia Superb etc for that journey.

I would recommend a work horse for that milage.

If you buy a 08 Mondeo with 70k miles on the clock for 12k it will have 160k on the clock in 3 years and be worth nothing.

While a 01 Mondeo with 110k on the clock for 2k will have 200k on the clock and be worthing as well.

While resale value is important, would going for an older car not bring other problems.
With a child in the car, safety would be a major concern. Surely with the inroads made in regard to safety in the last few years eg ISOfix, a newer model would make sense.

Indefinitely, I suppose. I'm not one to change car for the sake of it. Had my toyota since 07 and never planned to change it as I've never had a days trouble with it, but circumstances change.
