    Has 'the fear' gripped you?

I'm a big hairy man, so of course I laugh at fear.

But do you weaker people feel a general sense of fear in the air lately?

....ever since I realised nearly all of my shirts and jackets were red, I've had this sense of impending, inevitable doom.

Fear. This fear you speak of is it real?

The only thing to fear is fear itself. or when your jumping out of a plane at Thirty Thousand(30,000) Feet the only fear is fearing you dont make a splat on the ground :pac:

Worrying about the future is nothing more than an instinctive trait that we all carry to some degree. We are all the inheritors of a race which throughout evolution has had a remarkable ability to preoccupy - and worry - itself with the future.

The primitive man who couldn't keep warm because he didn't worry about his fire being extinguished, or lived in a habitat without fuel resources probably didn't have very many durable offspring, nor did whatever similarly reckless offspring he did have.

But the important thing is finding the optimal balance between worry, and boldness. Our ancestors needed to be brave enough to approach fire for warmth, but diffident enough to treat it with caution: they found the optimal balance, and that's where intelligence comes in.

My point, eventually, is that worrying is not a bad thing in itself. But being "a worrier" probably is, because it denies an individual of using his or her intelligence to best discern where the optimal diffidence:boldness ratio lies.

I do worry about the future. But I only worry about that which I am capable of avoiding.I don't worry about death, space aliens, extraordinary circumstance or natural phenomena. I do worry about getting run over by a bus, having my house burgled, developing lung cancer from smoking, and basically just being a liability to myself by failing to use my own intelligence.

There is no fear of jumping out of a plane at 30,000 ft as the cabin is pressurized and it would be impossible to open the door :)

I fear failing college even though I know that would not happen unless I have a break down between now and next month, or that I will never get a job even though thats unlikely or else that I'm going to be in a situation one day where I have zero income become homeless. But as soon as my financial situation is better I will start being fearful about even more trivial things.

The only thing i "fear" about the future is missing out on all the innovations in technology and science after I'm dead.

I always think about this, Think of all the amazing technology we will never get to see or use as we'll be 6 foot under ground.

OP, I don't know what's right and what's real anymore. And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore

Yeah I kind of do,I fear about our collective futures, I am all doom and gloom, the world is truly shifting and not in our favour. There is a new world order emerging and its not about liberal democracy, its more about extreme capitalism and we can't compete.

Ah ignore all that conspiracy stuff, we'll be grand.

I jumped in the river and what did I see?
    Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cars
All the things I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
    All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

More concern than fear, ie that we are heading down the slippery slope into a nanny fascist dictatorship thanks to our current and recent governments and the EU.

Ooh yeah, Ireland really seems like it will become a "dictatorship".

    Why wouldn't any of them?

Saying Ireland is a dictatorship or heading that way is exactly the kind of tripe they'd come out with - "The maaaaaan is oppressing me - I'm living in a dictatorship". I'd suggest they look up actual dictatorships.

Maybe... that's more of a commie kid/ Occupy Dame Street thing, though.

Hipsters are more likely to be concerned with homeless chic than the homeless tbh:)

We are well down that slope alright. Merkel was at it again this week, she just won't let up until she achieves her goal of complete Financial & Budgetary assimilation.
