I'm currently in my 4th and final year of an arts degree at trinity, my past exam results have fluctuated between 2:1 and 2:2, if I end up with a 2:2 what are chances of getting onto a masters course? Thanks

    it depends on the masters

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    it depends on the masters

+1 and which institutions you intend applying to.

there are many masters programmes that you can get get in to with a 2.2, check out d.i.t and u.c.c, trinity and u.c.d only really accept people with firsts or a 2.1 but there are rare exceptions

Bear in mind that your home institution may be more sympathetically inclined towards taking you back, even if you didn't quite reach the stated requirement for the course, especially if you're staying in the same department. After all, they know you & your work, and your lecturers will be able to mount a case for you (if of course you end up needing it). I know that this is so for some of TCD's humanities courses, for instance. But it really depends on which course you're interested in. Some are very competitive, and despite home institution bias might not be prepared to take you.

That said, there are courses out there which accept 2.2s, you just have to do a bit of research, and possibly contact a few course directors- if you approach them with your concerns, they might be able to advise.

I'm having the same concerns as I only got a 2.2 and I want to do a Masters in Marine in Cork university. I don't know how popular or competitive the course is with grades and the fact I do not have a degree in Marine but another denominated Science course. My thesis in the related field of marine got a good result so I don't know if i can wing in on that.

Would love to know of someone who got a 2.2 an entered that course.

I got into a Masters course with a 2.2 in TCD despite them advertising minimum being 2.1!

I work on a TCD masters course where we officially only accept 2.1+ But if we don't fill our places with those people, we will accept lower than that. We may have to make a case to the Dean, but she will normally accept our recommendation.

It depends on the Masters. If its science related a 2:1 is usually the norm but you can get into most Masters with just a 2:2 in particular Business and Computer Science Courses I think you can get in with a 2:2 but there are courses with the exception that require a 2:1 but you can get in with the 2:2 if its an upper 2:2 close enough to a 2:1 or that you have relevant work experience? Only under very exceptional courses would a first be the main requirement though most Masters Require a Second Class Honours.

If its a restricted field of study or very comprehensive that you need to have an undergrad in it then usually a 2:1 is a requirement but then again there are courses out there that are conversion Masters and often they will allow you in with a 2:2.

Have you looked into a Higher Diploma maybe? To be sure the course at Master Level is something you'd like to do...test the waters and all that?

I did a H Dip and I got in with a 2:2 from my Honours Degree. Most courses at Postgrad level want a second class honours at least. The Masters I were looking into all just required a 2:2. I achieved a 2:1 in the H Dip opening up more doors to Masters that require a 2:1. Though my degree result will still stand sometimes. Haven't done a Masters yet but looking into it and hope to complete one in the near future.

I have noticed that Trinity tend to except those with a 2:1 over a 2:2 depending on the course. Though the other Uni's and all the IT's generally a 2:2 is enough to gain entry to a course.

There is a good chance you get into most Master courses with a 2:2.
Have you looked into Masters in the UK?
