    Hey,

I am a first year and I am not really familiar with the exams/marking/repeats procedure in college yet. I want to apply for a J1 visa this year and I want to go away for the whole summer, but I am afraid to miss out on anything important. Do I have to stay in Ireland until I get my exam results or can I leave straight after my exams? And do I have to come back early or can I come back just before the term starts? I apologise if these questions seem silly, but I am really confused here :(

    Thanks.

    I'm not 100% sure but..

You fly out after your exams are done and then providing you don't fail anything you stay until whenever you're planning to come home. If you fail something you'll have to come back to repeat but most providers offer a "repeat insurance" where you can get flights back to do your repeats and fly back out, again not 100%.

The supplemental exams in TCD are really late compared to other places - the dates aren't out for next year yet, but as the link below shows, they weren't til the 29th of August - 5th of September this year.

    http://www.tcd.ie/calendar/assets/pdf/academic-year-structure-2011-12.pdf

There are rules surrounding the supplementals, you have to have permission to do them (which I think most people get as long as they show up to the original exams and make "reasonable effort" - and aren't marked non-satisfactory for any semesters).

As for the actual results, they're put online, so you don't need to wait here for those. The only problem would be that you'd probably find it hard to study if you were away without your books/notes/the library.

Of course, this is hypothetical. If you pass them all the first time around, there'll be no problems at all and you can sail off into the sunset (almost literally :P) until September.
