Some kids have tried to read some books about Mexican history, Latino history etc. The school have outlawed books on the subject and have punished the children by making them clean toilets on Saturday.

Weird if you ask me. Not holidaying there any time soon.

"The struggle to defend Raza Studies has for the most part been student-led, and their resistance has been amazing," Rodriguez said. "This is an attack specific to Chicano studies, but at its core this act of censorship is a black eye to the U.S. educational system. It is a black eye to the very idea of education because the state and TUSD are attempting to determine what is valid knowledge - what is acceptable and what is unacceptable knowledge. This dangerous precedent gives the message that students are free to learn everything except what the state finds objectionable. This should be a concern to every human being anywhere."

    Honest question.

Is the Huffington Post not a parody/joke site sometimes?
I could be wrong - probably am.

    It's a genuine news site

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Fair enough.
I noted a few times they had a humor section.
The thought occured that they might have the item in the first post, under that section.
    Thats all. :)

I wouldn't let that stop you its probably the most beautiful state in the country. It has a hell of a lot of issues regarding the 'Mexican problem' which won't be fixed anytime soon. Growing up as a kid in someplace like Tucson as an illegal immigrant is very tough. Schools are not receiving the funding they used to receive and so got rid of the easy target however this has been happening for the last few years in high schools and college course in U of A.

    The owner is a joke.

Every time Arianna speaks a person votes Republican. It is known.

As for the topic it is not surprising. Shiftless repiglican politicians have been blaming Mexicans on their **** leadership for a generation.

Richie you well know if it wasnt for those damn mexicans, america wouldnt have a deficit.
America needs a big fence with turrets and guard dogs that shoot wasps out of their mouths.

Do wasps work on mexicans

The kids protested about their school outlawing Chicano, Latino literature. Previously studied by the school. They marched to the Dept of education and were greeted by some bureaucrat who told them to go scrub toilets.

    I'm paraphrasing a bit.......

Wrong - Basically the kids were punished for not being white! And told that if they wasnt gonna act white then they'd be made clean toilets like mexicans

    Powerphrasing ofcourse

so they state shouldnt be allowed tell people what they can't learn in school... except of course if they want to learn about intelligent design right?

how many people here were applauding the decision in the uk to ban the teaching of intelligent design in some schools recently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,386 ✭✭✭Killer Wench

It is wrong of the state to attempt to ignore the reality of its population and its history. Up until the mid 1840, Arizona was a part of northern Mexico. "Mexican" is the largest ancestry group in Arizona with a total Hispanic population being around 30% of the population. It is ridiculous to say that teaching the history of its pre-American existence is playing into the victim mentality.

Seems an unreasonable marginalising course of action by a state.

Well there is sound logic behind not teaching intelligent design - it's bull****.

Where is the logic behind ignoring part of their history?

Everyone I hope. Children taught intelligent design from a young age have very little hope of being accepted in universities. If they are being taught ID then you can pretty much assume there's a lot of other distortions in their education. Historical rewrites ect.

    Don't be daft.
