Q on UK registration numbers and re-registering in Ireland

    Folks,

As I understand it, registration numbers in the Uk are based on an identifier (e.g. 07 for cars registered in the UK in 2007 between March and August 2007, 57 for car registered in UK between September 2007 and February 2008). I might be wrong on this, if I am, can someone please clarify how it works.

If the above is correct, does this mean when I import and re-register a '58' registered car to Ireland, it is registered as an 08 car? (as in 08D12345)
If this is correct, does the car then qualify for the newer cheaper tax bands, with it being a 2008 car??

Just trying to understand a little better..
    Any feedback appreciated;)

    Ta

A 58 plate can be late 08 or early 09. You need to check the reg date of the actual car to be sure what year it is.
When registering in Ireland, it will be given an 08 or an 09 depending on whether it was first regd in uk in 08 or 09.

A 58 plate will certainly be on the emissions based motor tax system. Vrt will also be charged based on emissions band - Vrt is emissions based for all ages.

    What type of car?

A 58 reg car will have been first registered between Sept 08 and March 09 so it could either be an 08 or 09 reg here. It will be taxed under the CO2 system - usually cheaper for diesel cars and more expensive for petrol.

Thats fairly outdated opinion now really. Even in 08, my petrol car was cheaper to tax under the new system.

Mine too but I'd suggest that most petrols 1.6 and above would be cheaper under the cc system. Could be wrong though;)

My 1.8T audi is cheaper on the new system and I believe much larger engined bmw petrols have ended up with cheaper tax too

You'll also now get a stupid Reg number highlighting the fact its an import. Something like120,999.

Was it registered 2008 though? From memory the emissions aren't great ok that engine so it could cost quite a bit to register in Ireland.
