How likely am I to get done for it? ...
Like everyone else importing from outside the EU you are likely to be liable for customs clearance charges. import duties and VAT, the precise rates I don't know, maybe someone else will.

You are not getting "done" for these; like every other EU citizen you'll be liable.

Why would you ask your supplier to get themselves involved in an illegal smuggling activity? It's bad enough that you seem to making a scheme to defraud the tax-payers of the country, why attempt to make someone else complicit?

I didn't know that .. its just when I wanted to buy something from outside the EU before the supplier asked me if I would like him to change the item description to 'Gift' ..

It's illegal. Call it "smuggling" or "tax evasion" if you like and of course I came down in the last shower, a bit like yourself.
