If Windows 7 you can get recover discs for your version here. Just activate it with the Toshiba product key under the laptop

Thanks Nick. Windows 7 it is. I'll give this a try as soon as I get the laptop back and see what happens.

I obviously need to burn it to a disc ? If so what type a CD or DVD one ?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,017 Mod ✭✭✭✭yoyo

A Blank Single layer DVD 5 is what you need to burn it onto, you could use a USB Key either but some laptops don't support USB booting. You can burn the iso with www.imgburn.com

Surely he'll still have the problem of not being able to get his network drivers as it's just the O/S he's getting there and not the drivers...

You should be able to find any drivers missing on your machine here if that's what the problem is.

I totally misread the post, assumed OP meant re-install Windows, oops :o

I'll try break this down to simpler terms :)

About 3/4 months ago my laptop's graphic card or motherboard fried, tbh i can't even remember as it was a few months ago ( I started a thread here back then asking if it could be a BIOS issue), anyway that was repaired in a repair shop.

Brought the laptop home and couldn't connect to the internet. Tried a few different things but nothing worked. Eventually I went into Device Manager and saw that the network adaptors were missing.

Brought the laptop back to the shop where it was before and they said that to get the drivers back I would need the recovery disc but unfortunately I am unable to find it in the house and they haven't had much luck themselves getting hold of one either.

Until I get one/find one the laptop is useless as far as I know.

Thanks. I don't have the laptop with me now, its still in the repair shop but I'll probably end up taking it back during the week and when I do I'll give that a go.

The only thing is though, would they have not tried this already ?

They did make it clear that the disc was needed :o

The repair shop should have the skills to fix this issue without the recovery disc for you. I'm quite suprised by this, network drivers are usually easy enough to locate. When I read recovery disc I assumed the OS recovery one, hence suggesting to re-download Windows!

Thats what loads of others thought as well but there was a bad design with my model that required the disc for this issue unlike other laptops. Or so I was told.

I must find out if re-installing windows is an option. Before I sent the laptop back to the shop I took all my music and other stuff of it and have them on my current laptop now.

    Thanks for the replies people.

I'm going to give the shop a ring tomorrow and ask them again what exactly is the issue that requires the disc in order to fix it. And then I'm going to take it home with me when I get a chance. I'll post back Wednesday the latest when I know what the story is.....

http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tools/updates/realtek-wlan/realtek_wlan_win7_2000016L_20110523.zip might be the WLAN driver.

The toshiba page I linked earlier asks for a "Short Model No" with 2 possibilities, don't know which yours is.

Extract the driver file somewhere like the desktop (use Winrar). In device manager right click network adaptor>Properties>Update driver, specify location and point to the folder on the desktop :)

Thats the thing though, there is no network adaptor in device manager.

Is this for wireless or lan port? Make sure in the bios that the onboard nic is enabled

Usually [F2], [DEL], keys it depends. You do this when you see the Toshiba logo, look for Enter Setup... Try f2, DEL etc.

Just checked it there, was already enabled.

I've been trying to see if I can do something using ''Add legacy hardware'' but not quite sure what exactly I need to do.

Seems a bit odd Windows isn't picking it up, I wonder has it gone faulty? You should see something under device manager.
Anyways another thing you can try is add new hardware, choose I have disk and point it to the driver folder

TBH I seem to be getting nowhere.

Even when I get to the ''Have Disc'' part it doesn't read it, and when I find the disc through ''Browse'' there are 7 files (boot, efi ect ) and the folders are empty.

Think i'm best of getting someone who has more knowledge then me to look at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,285 ✭✭✭bonzodog2

The wired LAN is likely part of the motherboard, but the wifi card would be like this
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Toshiba-Satellite-L450D-12x-Wi-Fi-Wireless-Card-/370577051541?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL&hash=item56481d0f95
or you may find another cheaper. It seems unlikely that both would fail, but the wifi should be an easier replace if you get nowhere by software. You could also see if it boots from USB and boot up with a Live Linux CD image, maybe that would see LAN/WLAN.

When you do "Have disk" you point it not to the Windows 7 disc but the folder with extracted driver. Are we talking Wireless LAN or Ethernet network port here?

Both, since neither are working but mainly wireless.

Could you post a screenshot of your device manager? I'm suprised that neither the LAN or WLAN chips are being detected in Windows, I've not come accross that before tbh!

Thats really strange, not to have any network adaptors being detected at all... I would nearly go as far as saying that someone may have physically removed the devices because Windows should pick up something, even without drivers. If your comfortable opening up the machine have a look for the wireless card (find a service manual for your laptop online) and see whats up, I'm not suggesting for a moment the shop has done something here, but I've reloaded many OSes and never come accross this! All hardware Windows should detect, and alert if its incorrectly installed accordingly (ie missing drivers)

Just to clarify, it was the mother board that had to be replaced a few months ago however this is not a common issue but it has been know to happen. i.e. where the network adapters just vanish.

Still has me stumped though! Without Windows detecting anything I don't think you'll have a chance with the drivers getting installed, Windows needs to have the hardware identified before drivers will do much.
Is it since the motherboard was replaced that the network adaptors arn't working? It could well be a hardware issue or even some incompatability

Yep. laptop was perfect (well it's had it's moments) since the motherboard was replaced.

Anyway here's a few more screen shots.

Not trying to be funny...but check the wireless switch on the front of the laptop...make sure it is on...has caught me out a few times.

If that's F8 your referring to, then that doesn't work.

BTW, Nick, would you be able to edit the thread title to something like ''Unable to install network adaptor on Toshiba L450d'' please ?

Done :) . another thing that crossed my mind, are you sure you installed the system chipset drivers?

I wouldn't know what they are tbh. Anyway I installed the usb adapter and have it working now. My mate who knows his stuff reckons that the wifi card is either damaged or missing. I have a feeling he's right but I think it could be a matter of knowing how to install the drivers properly too.

I'll probably end up buying a wifi card soon and seeing what happens. Shouldn't have too much trouble doing that. If I can take apart a ps3 disc drive I should be able for this :D
