Don't know if this was put up before lads but anyone interested in trapping might find it interesting!

Might solve the problem of getting that first call bird!

A pal of mine has been making them up for years using two shopping baskets. Very effective especially when birds are laying and you bait it with fake eggs on a bit straw.

you can make something very similar with a fenn trap a welder and some mesh ;)

That's just what I'm looking for. I have a bird feeder which the magies are using as a hunting ground for song birds. Shooting and large traps are out of the question.
PM me if anyone can get one made up. Cheers

Nothing new about it - my auld boy has had a 4+1 larson trap in the yard for 2 years now. It'd be considered a big trap I suppose but it's not actually that big - about 3ft square and a foot high.

There's a thread on how to make a 2+1 here from a few years back.

For best results you need an unknown maggie (one from another area - if you're a good few miles from North Kildare, the auld boy could sort you with that) to put in the center cage. When the local boys spot the foreigner they'll come down after him and into the outer cages with them. Do as you please with them from there.

The ones that open from the top might be a more targeted option than the side opening ones, although I'm not sure if they're as effective (someone else on here probably knows more about that than I )- the auld boys one is the latter and you'll occasionally find hedgehogs in there coming in after the food that's left in for the lad in the center of the trap.

When he started trapping them at first, he was getting 4-6 every day, 2 years on now that's dropped to maybe 1 a week or less, and you'd have to see the difference in the song bird population to believe it - it's fantastic!

Larsen and larsen mate are two different traps ;)

Larsen mate is used to catch a call bird in the first place.

ahh - ok I get you.

I was entirely oblivious to that distinction between the two - 'pologies.

Just wanted to post a pic of the ones a friend of mine makes. As you can see they are two new baskets so they are very shiny-dont know if thats good or bad as some people will tell you that magpies are attracted to shiny objects-but I caught everything from magpies to jackdaws to Grey Crows in this one. The ones he makes now are painted green and have a carry handle on the top which acts as a perch aswell before they hop down onto the main one.

I suddenly have the urge to shop in various multiples over the next couple of weeks...

Here's pics of the Larsen Mate trap I got off Moby 30. Got my first Magpie the first day it was out. No picture of the bird as it quickly went to a boards member who was looking for a call bird. Grand little trap
