Practice, practice and more practice. There is no magic solution I'm afraid.

The improvement in distance is as a result of an improvement in the basics.

Make sure your grip is correct and all those smaller things. Then move onto the contact. Hit the ball up against the gable end of your house or any wall you can find. It'll take time to improve it but after a week of doing it for maybe a few minutes a day you should see a great improvement. Then you could increase the distance of the passes. It'll be hard but try and hit as many of the shots with the sweet point of the boss.

Get the shorter passes right and then take this technique onto the pitch and use it for the cross field passes. You should have improved contact and distance then. It worked for me, hopefully it does for you.

As Jimmy said, find a wall to puck up against. If there's a handball alley around even better.

this is me weaker side. I have no problem hitting the ball low but when I try to hit it high and get distance on it, it only works for me about 50% of the time

Like I said, find a wall or an alley to play up against. You'll be able to practice striking a lot more efficiently than if you were in a field with a bag of sliotars. It also develops your anticipation skills, first touch, all that.
