    Hey,

Got a prospective History and Archaeology student here...can anyone name one or two of the core texts for the Irish History and Archaeology course? He'd like to get a bit of reading in to help in the long run.

    Cheers...

it really depends on what lecturer you get and which aspect of the course they choose. archaeology really focuses on the notes you take in the lecture. history is pretty much the same. i would say read Easter 1916 by charles townsend. that's a pretty important book for Irish history. if you need more help just PM me :)

Thanks for the suggestion but the student to be is mostly focused on archaeology. What's the core text on the reading list in rerlatiin to archaeology or Irish archaeology in particular?

The Prehistoric Archaeology of Ireland by Waddell is the main text for first year Archaeology.

The Prehistoric Archaeology of Ireland by John Waddell is, as mentioned, the core text for the prehistoric Ireland section of the 1st year course. For the historic section, I think Nancy Edwards' The Archaeology of Early Medieval Ireland and Kieran O'Conor's The Archaeology of Medieval Rural Settlement in Ireland would be good - Terry Barry's The Archaeology of Medieval Ireland would be good too.

Check out the link below and follow the links into the first-, second- and third-year courses - each module is described and most modules list their core texts at the bottom.

Super! That's exactly the sort of response I was hoping for.
