Return of the dreaded fuel pump problem

Well lads. This happened before over a year ago but i thought it best to start a new thread. Its a 90 efi escort. Went to start it and the fuel pump isn't energising/making a loud hum when you turn on the ignition. I've dropped the tank as the pump is inside it and to get at the connections. There's a large brown wire and a Black/Red wire, as well as 3 other wires I believe to be for the sender using an old pump as a guide. Brown is earth everywhere else on the car so i put the black probe off the multimeter on it and the red probe on the Black/Red wire with the ignition turned on. Nothing is registering on the multimeter from this. I also hooked up the pump wires to a battery after from the car and nothing is happening It had a brand new relay fitted last time round under the dash which is clicking when you turn on the ignition. Anyone have any input as to whether the pump is dead this time round? The thing i dont understand is the non-reading on the multimeter from the wiring loom, unless I've done it wrong. Thanks in advance.

So on the loom u have no power are u sure of that now u should have two lives I think or but when u switch the ignition on your getting no reading off the loom fist ting to do is get the multimeter wire earthed and them check all 5 wires for power. If you have no power there then u have a power supply problem u also said u brought power directly to them pump and it wouldn't work well then the pump Is knackerd.so first ting is check the loom ok.need any other advice just ask k

Thanks for info. I just took the pump out of the tank itself and put 2 wires directly to it as opposed to the connector block and it works perfect. I'll try what you said about power to the 5 wires and get back to ye. It'll be tomorrow though. Done for the night now me thinks.:D

Are you sure the inertia switch hasn't been triggered? IIRC its under the spare wheel on old escorts.

Sorry forgot to say that's the first thing i checked but it was in the right position. Is it posible for an inertia switch to be faulty?

Possible alright, they are often effected by any dampness in the boot.

The ticking under the dash may not be the fuel pump relay, the will be ignition relays etc the will switch with the ignition on to.

Okay so i did a test on all the 5 wires in the connector block with the ignition turned on. Only one of them is giving a voltage reading(small brown/red wire, maybe for sender ?) and the rest are dead by the looks of it. The 2 big wires going to the pump are giving no reading. I said previously i retested the pump and its giving good flow.might have been a dirty contact the first time. So am i looking at a relay problem? There are 2 earthing points i could find in relation to this part of the loom and they are clean, tight and rust free. I've also taken out the inertia switch just to make sure its clicking on and off properly which it is. I do have a damp problem in the boot of the car so this probably isn't helping.

I have found the problem to be the inertia switch. Traced power as far as the switch but not coming out the other side. I'll have to get a second hand one by the looks of it.
