In advance of the Budget for 2012 it was muted that employers rather than the Department of Social Protection pay the initial portion of sick pay.

Thank goodness this proposal was not implemented and should never be implemented in the private sector as this is the only sector that can create the productive enterprising employment needed to generate revenue to create and expand....... jobs, work, services etc. in the public sector.

By all means apply this proposal to the public and semi state sectors and we can be certain it will reduce the sick pay bill borne by all tax payers.

if the PS or semi state pay the sick pay, doesnt it still come out of exchequer funds? Its a bit like telling your right pocket not to pay for petrol, and allowing your left pocket to pay?

Explain how this will work. I am intrigued.

Because the money will come from the particular departments budget rather than central coffers and management will start looking at sick days less favourable and the slackers will be dealt with.

But the sick pay is paid from the Dept. of Social...........
You cant have one employment law for PS and one law for PrvS.

Either way, Deptments would have budgeted for employees salaries, so whether they are sick or not, they will still be paying the same outgoings on salaries.

This does not involve any change in employment law it is solely a question of accounting and accountability!

It would be a bit of a back door approach to solve the chronic misuse/abuse of the sick pay system in the PS. The govt needs to come up with a better system than they have at present.

And semi state bodies.............at least it would be the beginning of transparency. Your comment is appreciated.

Wouldn't private sector management not do the same if they had to pay? I know private sector employments who are happy to see some employees off the premises on taxpayer-funded "sick" leave.

I thought the measure was a good one and should be applied equally to the private sector and the public sector. But that doesn't wash with the anti-public service rants on here.

Now, if you want to tackle absenteeism in the public sector, there are other ways of doing it. First, tackle the sick pay schme. Change the rules on uncertified sick pay. Secondly, make it more difficult to stay out on certified sick pay by requiring them to regularly attend the company doctor. Thirdly, make the payment of sick leave more discretionary. Finally, run better absenteeism management systems.

I know, those measures are not as straight-forward or mob-pleasing as some of the other rants on this board but they make much more sense.
