hi all,bit of a clutch problem on my transit,im kinda stuck on this one.
on a long journey today i noticed a slight humming/wirring sound coming from the clutch side of the front of my van(2001 fwd 2.0) it went after a while and all seemed ok,then had to do a quick trip down the town and then it happened, clutch went......no pressure on the pedal whatsoever
    first inkling is bearing????

so bit of history, bought the van with 146k on her had to replace the clutch at 152k,the clutch allready had the upgraded solid fly wheel but still cost me €800(so 3rd clutch that i no of being put in her) i dont have big loads in her and dont do big mileage so now with less than 15k on her this has happened,i no they have weak clutches but this is a bit much, would anyone have any idea? surely it's not the clutch gone again.....
    thanks for looking

It certainly sounds like a problem with the concentric slave cylinder. Was it changed along with the clutch the last time I wonder?

had to google concentric slave cylinder :D

seems that it's only the 6 gear transit that has that fitted but do you think it may be the slave cylinder?

All front wheel drive transits have a concentric release bearing. Enjoy taking the box out or pray that a pipe has burst to it:pac:

getting confused now,is there a concentric slave cylinder and a concentric bearing on my model  or a slave cylinder on the outside of my gearbox and a concentric bearing on the inside?????

The clutch release bearing and the clutch slave cylinder are combined into one part which is called the concentric slave cylinder.

The slave cylinder and release bearing are the one, thats a concentric release bearing. The older five speed rear wheel drive had an external slave cylinder.

im almost positive it was replaced(googled an image)
surely it hasn't gone again allready,as i said i dont carry heavy loads and have done little mileage, unfortunately guarantee is up by 2 months

Can you see fluid leaking from the bottom of the gearbox?

checked this morning and yes there is a leak from the bottom of the gearbox

i suppose this means the concentric slave cylinder is kaput?

Make sure the leak is not leaking from the top down as it could be a pipe but very very unlikely. Just check to be sure but Im going to say 100% your concentric release bearing is gone. Did they replace that the last time?

had a good look, leak seems to be from the bottom no sign of wet area up high,i was onto the lad that replaced clutch last time and he says he did replace it but i have my doubts,it is a year and a half since he replaced it but ive done less than 10k so im really pissed off at this.
this is really killing me only spent €600 putting it through it's doe and now this

can i just replace the slave cylinder? (clutch only has 10k on her) it would save a lot of money if i could, slave cylinder can be got for around €70 but complete kit is running between €350/400

any opinions on whether i can get away with just replacing the slave cylinder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

Yeah you can just replace it on its own.

It depends on how much fluid has leaked out of it. Sometimes the clutch can be heavily contaminated with fluid in which case it wouldn't be a good idea to try to re-use it.
