I am planning on getting a shipment from China of some stock for resale.

The stock will be purchased for approx $1000 in USD including shipment costs.

What type of duty and costs is a shipment like this likely to incur?

You'll be liable to both duty and vat on the euro converted rate of 1000usd. Depending on what exactly your importing different items have different duty rates.

As an example of something at 10% duty, your looking at 10% of €773 (usd to euro conversion) so €77 + 773 = €850 then 23% of that for vat = € 195.56 + clearance fee to shipping agent which is €6 upwards depending on the company,so roughly €278 extra for whatever you buy once it lands here and is delivered to your door.

Read the first post here, it has info and a link to a calculator which will pick the duty rate etc.
