NAS vs Cloud backup

Me head is melted with this!:o:D

Been looking at NAS and was thinking of this device. I have two available 1TB HDDs, but, as it would be onsite, if anything happened (breakdown or fire) then that would be it.

I've looked at Justcloud and they're offering (if you take it for two years) unlimited storage for E4.99 a month.

The NAS will cost E180 and I'll probably have to up the HDDs at some point. My main backup would come to around 160GB in total (at present).

Just cloud appears to be the most popular cloud backup.

Just wondering about security/privacy, etc. All suggestions/observations welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

    Freddie.

think realistically, what is your upload rate like.

the average upload rate in ireland is tiny, even if you took 1Mb/s which most aren't, would take you over 15 days to upload.

I would say go for an onsite and offsite HD backup. Leave one in the office, parents or good friends house and regularly swap the HD's. Have the one connected to your computer backup every hour or day, what ever frequency suits you

30 Meg down; 3 Meg up. I see where you're coming from. Might be the most realistic. I've just read about the Yanks having to give access to law enforcement etc. Nothing to hide, it's just my own music collection and a shedload of photos, but I still don't like the idea of someone poking at it without my knowledge.

trust me, having done this for years, the only way you will be 100% happy that your data is safe is having somewhere that you can physically plug in and hold. You plug it in, see its there and put it in a drawer, you know its still there in a weeks time. WIth cloud backup, you're relying on someone else's server not to get completely fried or whatever. Yes they're very reliable etc etc but the human brain is funny like this.

I backup to a NAS but I make a backup of my backup. Not so much saved media like TV shows and movies, but my source code repositories and Time Machine backup would be hard to lose.

The backup backup I keep either in my office or my parent's house.

I use Arq to backup the essentials to Amazon S3 it's more costly than off the shelf cloud backup solutions but you can choose which data centre is used for storage.

An onsite backup is handy to have in case your Internet connection goes down or you have to do a complete system restore.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like a fireproof box is the best bet!

I'd go for both a local NAS and an off-site backup, either cloud or parents house.

The NAS is great for using your music/video at home, especially if you have an app like Skifta on your phone or any dlna players in the house. No way you want to be pulling that down from the web to play it, or browse folders.

The online backup like Justcloud (or my own personal favourite BackBlaze) is really bulletproof when it come to protection from fire etc. In my own case, I've got about a terabyte of stuff I really wanted to have backed up (photo etc), I don't really care about the movies etc.

It's taken a few months to complete the first upload, but from now on I'm just doing incremental backups of a few GBs for new photos. At the place I use, my data's encrypted and I have the option to base that encryption on a locally held private key so their admins can't see my data.
