Hi there I'm thinking of doing commerece or business information systems in the autumn. I was wondering if any current students in these subjects or past students could tell me their experiences of the course and what to expect.

Also I have a thick donegal accent, would i need to learn some corkonian to fit in? thanks:D

well first of all i think i should tell you that bis and commerce are VERY different!

i am a commerce student myself and love it, im in 2nd year and the variety is unreal. It basically means you cant hate all the subjects available to you, and in 3rd year you have the opportunity to study abroad, which i am takinng advantage of!

BIS, i have a module in and i HATE it, it is very difficult and onvioosuly all computer based!

    Hope this helps!

Hey, I'm in final year BIS. There are already a few threads around involving BIS, but I'll give you a quick reply here too.
First off, Commerce is obviously a business degree. It's almost entirely business subjects, with a few exception for languages (if you do Comm and a language) or for IS subjects. They get a huge choice of modules, you can specialise in certain areas of business such as accounting, law or major in food business in final year.
BIS is a far more IT focused course. If you're into computers it's not a bad choice. It gives you a great variety of modules as well. For example in 4th you can chose from Android development, Web Applications and IS for Financial Services (great example of how it's a very business oriented IT degree). There's the opportunity to do a 6 month work placement in 3rd year as well. Most people get work in either Ireland or America (mostly Boston, a few in Chicago and New York as well), with a few going to other places. There was one company in Trinidad looking for someone.
I dunno about Commerce, but most of the people doing BIS tend to be from Munster at least. You'll prob be living down here though so you'll pick up the local language pretty quickly. Nothing wrong with the Donegal accent though, anything is better than the Dub accent. :P

Well i'm doing commerce and chinese at the moment so obv I'd tout my own subject , commerce is very broad in the subject areas , eg my modules are Law, Accounting, politics, chinese business culture, marketing, management ,chinese language and economics , you could also pick a stats module !
Its tough enough as the modules don't tie together unlike other degrees so lots of study , personally I'd say it could be hard to make mates in straight commerce as the classes are so big , but if you do a language its pretty easy to get to know ppl !
there was a girl in my class from donegal last year actually , this year theres a lad from mayo , but thats more because bcomm and chinese is only in cork n DCU so not many options ! Straight commerce I'd say most are from munster and kilkenny !
In third year in bcomm theres the chance for an erasmus , if youre doing a language its mandatory , so for 3rd year i'l be going to college in shanghai , if your doing straight comm then you'll only get a place on erasmus based on your marks which will have to be pretty good as theres serious demand for places !

Hiya just have a few quick questions on this course - Masters Business Information Systems.

For Anyone that has done the BIS Masters or currently in it or know of it, is it very technical or is it very much business orientated?

Is there much programming and coding in it? And what are the main programming languages being taught?

Is there any modules in it with Business Intelligence, Databases, statistics, economics, management, marketing in the course? Or is it more Business Analysis which is more gear towards what exactly?

Is the Masters course a branch off from the BIS Degree, is it similar, the same or slightly different to the BIS Degree?

Is it a suitable course for pursing IT/Technical Support/Programming and Coding jobs?

Thanks in advance. (sorry for bumping this thread) any information on it I'd greatly appreciate it thanks.

Hey, first off, there are a few BIS masters degrees, I assume you're talking about the MBS BIS degree.
From what I can see on the page about it here it's aimed more at business and analysis roles. Check out the link there though and stuff for more though I'd say.
