    Hi all,

I am thing of doing FETAC Introduction to Nursing module with progressive college through distance learning and wondered has anyone done this course and what they thought of it? Also there is a practical part of the course (Observations) which is thought over 2 saturdays would this be enough time to learn practical skills? Finally they recommend you do 20 hours work experience would it be hard to secure this (maybe in a nursing home).
The course starts early february, so I would need to enrol soon and would appreciate any comments/advice.

Hi there, I am currently doing that same FETAC course, but I am doing it full time. I love it! the work experience is easy to get because they help you get it in the college. You can chose to take mental health, children's nursing, general nursing, or midwifery as one of your subjects to get a taster of what the job would be like. The subject you chose to take is where you will complete your 2 weeks of work exp. I am taking mental health so my work exp will be in a psychiatric unit. I didn't need to do anything to get my place as my teacher found it for me. If you take mental health for example you can still apply to do your degree in midwifery, its only to get a taster of the field of nursing. Its an excellent course and you are given alot of feedback and help during it to reassure you of your progress. I guarantee you that you'll know if nursing is for you at the end of it.. Goodluck :)

It depends on what you want out of it. It is only one module which leaves it 7 modules short of a full FETAC Level 5 award and would therefore be useless for progressing onto a nursing course.

    Thanks for the replies,
I only intended doing this module as I have a place deferred for midwifery and will be starting in september. As I haven't studied since I left school many years ago (mature Student) I thought this module would help me both get into the habit of studying again and gain extra insight into the nursing profession. But I am concerned that it will be difficult if not impossible to get work experience (20 hours needed) without any help from the college as it is a distance course.
Do you think it would be possible to find work experience maybe within a nursing home??
