Mail no longer works after installing Outlook

I've installed Outlook to receive my work emails, but since doing so I no longer receive any emails through Apple Mail. I have this set up to receive my Gmail, and it worked fine until I started using Outlook.
I'm sure there's an easy solution, but I can't figure it out.
    Any help?

Go into Outlook preferences and see if Outlook is set to be your default e-mail client - that might make a difference.

Why don't you set a mail box in Outlook for your gmail as well - you can set it up as an exchange account and it works well.

In your Outlook settings, you should set it to leave messages on the server. At the moment, it sounds like when you open them or thrash them it is removing them from the server, and there is nothing for mail to find. Do the same on mail.

Strange, it turns out it's an issue with my VPN. Once i disconnect from it I can retrieve emails from Mail again. I'm not sure why this is - perhaps its a policy my work has put in place?
Anyway, looks like I have a workaround for now.
