Drugs payment schemes

    Hi,
Ive just been diagnosed with a chronic condition which will require ongoing prescriptions. I've never used the drugs payment scheme before so any advice would be appreciated.

I've just gotten married so can we apply as a couple or does it need to be 132e odd each per month? Can I apply in the pharmacy? And how long does it take to process?

Is there anything else that can be claimed back on pharmacy expenses? I will not qualify for a medical card but this will be a major jump in my monthly outlay.
    Thanks

    Hi,

the drugs payment scheme will cover you and your husband and any children you have up to a maximum of 132e in a calender month, most pharmacies can sign you up as an emergancy or if not they should have the forms to send away, im not sure what its like in maynooth but in wicklow were i work you get the cards back in about a month but sometimes if you ring up they will give you the number over the phone.

at the end of each year ask what ever pharmacy you have used for a med1 for this shows how much you have spent over the year and you can download a form from the revenue site and send that away, you can claim something back but im not sure how much.

one last thing ask your doctor to write the drug name on the prescription and ask in the pharmacy if there is a generic of the drug, might make things a bit cheaper

    hope that helps

That's great thanks. Never really had to worry about it apart from paracetamol before. I'll apply when I get release tomorrow then and hopefully will get processed quickly. Ty for the tip on the med1 too. I'll make sure I stick to the one pharmacy
