Looks like it has passed the first hurdle...eventually!

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-foyle-west-16626225

Derry's bid to host the All-Ireland Fleadh in 2013 has been given the go-ahead to progress to the next stage.
The final vote at a meeting of Derry Comhaltas delegates on Wednesday night was 13-1 in favour.
Some Comhaltas members, who initially opposed the move because of the UK link in Derry's City of Culture 2013 title, did not attend.
The bid will now go to the Comhaltas Ulster Council to be ratified.
A final decision expected is by the end of the month.
Gerry O'Hara from the Comhaltas Derry city branch said some branches in South Derry had indicated concerns.
"I think people in the city were quite incredulous that people in their own county would vote against the fleadh coming," he said.
"It's unheard of that people would vote against their own county."

It would be excellent to see the All-Ireland Fleadh come north of the border for the first time :)

The bid has fallen at the next hurdle...:(

"Security concerns" were cited as the reason

So was it the Ulster council who said no or when the bid went higher up than that?

That wasn't the only reason. These idiots in maghera were being petty and decided to kick up stir because it would be on the same year as the city of culture.

Yeah, the Ulster Council. The decision has been appealed to the All-Ireland committee. We'll have to wait and see what the outcome will be. The final decision on where the 2013 Fleadh will be held is on Saturday.

The only reason that has been given is that there were 'security concerns'. You are talking about a previous meeting in which the South Derry branches of the Comhaltas voted against having it during the UK City of Culture. It went to a second vote and it went through (due to the fact that the South Derry delegates failed to turn up :pac:).

They've sent off their appeal. Fingers crossed for a turnaround.

Dare I say it, but is Derry going for a little bit too much in 2013? Fair play we've got the City of Culture but does that mean we need to apply to host everything and anything that's remotely cultured? I was chatting to a woman who is heavily involved and she was telling me about how they were applying for X, Y and Z events to come to Derry that year and basically was saying that they were trying to get literally any event they could to come along. I just thought that it sounds plain old greedy. There are other cities/towns who deserve events during that year as well. "Oh but, we're the City of Culture", "Think of the jobs this will bring to the city". Other places need jobs too!

On top of that, will there not be a bit of culture overkill? I can see a decent amount of Derry people turning up to these events, but not if there's one on every fortnight.

Are you jealous :p anyway I agree it should be Belfast that got it as people will actually goto Belfast I can't see many people from England going to Derry not to mention that there's bombs all the time and they don't want it

What should be in Belfast? The City of Culture or the Fleadh? This thread is about the Fleadh.

It appears that the Ulster council have reversed their decision. What a fiasco. The final decision will be made on Saturday - it's between Derry, Sligo and Ennis. After the county and then Ulster making a balls of it, I don't know what way the vote will go.
