I have an xps m1530. When I switch it on it gets to a black screen with a flashing white cursor, but goes no further.

It does boot off a cd, and after doing so, the drive is visible. It also sees the drive in the diagnostics, for which it passes the drive. The drive is also visible and functional if it is placed in an enclosure and used as an external drive on another computer, and it is functional if connected as an internal drive via a SATA port.

The hdd is an ssd. I kept the old drive without changing it, which was still functional, though giving warnings it was likely to fail soon. The same thing happens when this drive is put in it.

While it doesnt appear to be the hdd itself, it is similar to an issue I was having with the same model of drive on my main computer - until I updated the firmware. However I have updated the firmware and it has made no difference. [Because of restrictions on my internet connection and the updater tools I needed to conenct it as an internal drive on the main computer to do this - just if someone is wondering why I took that step].

One last thing - it did start correctly once since this started occurring - which was immediately after connecting it as an external drive via an enclosure. Seems irrelevant but I've included it for the sake of completeness.

Any suggestions? Seems like a motherboard issue to me. If that is the case I think a new laptop is the best option, given the number of motherboard issues I've had with that computer (all the other ones happened inside the warranty - which has now expired.

I tried changing the boot order to place the hdd as the first one to try. It then worked - goign into resuming windows, then gviing a BSOD immediately. Restarting had it boot ok. appears fine now.

So it seems to have been erroneously exxpecting to boot from a device that isnt actually present. ..

edit: Yes further investigation indicates this is exactly what was happening. If external usb device is set higher in the boot order than the hdd and an external hdd is connected it then the issue recurs. If either of these is untruie then it boots fine. This explains why it worked once since it started happening - presumably I had not the external drive connected on that occasion.

    Weird one.
