As the title says, viewing an automatic HDI Peugeot 406 later tonight. I've done the research and it seems the electrics are the one to look out for. Anything else I should take a close look at? Any common problems with auto box?

If it has the same autobox as the Renault Scenic my daughter's packed in at 60,000 miles. Checked the internet and others have had same problem.

The 406 has nothing in common with a Scenic or any other Renault. Peugeot and Citroen share components as they are the same company.

Why would it have the same autobox as a Scenic? May as well ask has it the same box as a Ferrari 360. Although I'm sure theres been at least one case of every massed produced gearbox, manual and auto, goign at 60k at some stage.

I'm on the lookout for an auto Xantia to add to my collection (or maybe even just a box and do a swap) , now that has the same box as the 406 (among many other parts)

The 406 was one of the best peugeots that peugeot every made...
the Hdi's are great solid engine and are well able for 200k +mls once well serviced/maintained.
Never came across to many autoboxes but as above they share the same box as the C5's which are pretty reliable.
If its had a good service history then you should be sound.
Just insure c/locking,elec windows etc are working o.k.
    Best of luck with it...;)

    Well wear :)

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it? What year, mileage, NCT, general condition is the car? Any link to an ad?

Nice car alright, had considered one or two in the past but went for proper suspension instead (Xantia) :)

Was just looking for ad and he's taken it down. It's a silver 01 HDi GTX. Was up for 2200 about a month ago, came down to 1800 a few weeks ago and finally down to 1500 earlier this evening. I picked it up for 1400. Mileage is low at 110,000 and it's very tight. Auto box is seamless up and down through all gears and the engines still pulling strongly. All electrics working perfectly. NCT until May of this year, but was just passed in November just gone and backdated.

Bad points are few and all cosmetic. 2 small cracks on the bottom of the front bumper and some paint chipped away in same spot. Might have it fixed, but might not either. Very happy overall with it.

You did well! Sounds like a straight & sound car to me. It's amazing isn't it? I picked up an excellent condition low mileage '01 Saab recently for the same money. Also just passed the NCT and lots of money spent. The car looks and feels like just a few years old. Mine is a manual unfortunately :)

When I was doing my search around 08 I was bidding on a lovely 2.0 executive auto in the UK on Ebay Think it was an 03 iirc. Had to drop out when biddign hit £2.5k or so as it was over budget with VRT. Looked immaculate and had leather. Pity. Maybe it will surface again :)

Well wear with it OP, they are rare in auto form and those are about tend to be high spec.

I'd agree with Row, they are the last best car Peugeot built, the 407 is not a patch on it. If I was looking for a frugal diesel of that vintage it would be top of my list. A very underrated car both back then and today by the general public who tend to put more faith in VAG diesels of similar age which trade for silly money. It will be interesting to see how the 508 stands up to 406 long term.

    Enjoy your new motor.

    I know the feeling :D

Thought that my €1350 car had one of those obsolete wired phone car kits. When I went to remove it, it turned out that hidden behind the cloth was a nice Nokia bluetooth handsfree kit - properly connected to the cars audio system and all :D

Stop talking through your arse spreading misinformation.

OP, is it the facelifted version? I always had a soft spot for the 406 HDi, a true all rounder. Decent looking, spacious, great ride and handling, tough but modern engines, underrated by status obsessed Joe Public so therefore cheap now and in it's day the best car in its class.

Not sure - what was changed in the facelift? Have had a quick look but couldn't find any info.

The facelifted 406 appeared in 1999. It has a slightly different front to the pre facelifted model. Different front grill/radiator, light cluster front and rear are slightly different too. HDi engines appeared around the same time too.

I'm guessing being a 01 means it'll be the facelift version then right?
