Macbook Pro grey screen

    Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can advise about this. About a week ago, my MBP began to play up, not letting me get past a grey screen. I've looked at Apple's FAQ about this (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570) and tried everything they suggest but no luck.

I've got an appointment booked in the Apple shop but I'm worried they'll try to charge me a fortune to repair it. Does anyone know if Apple has ever accepted a fault related to this problem(I had an issue with my screen about 6 months ago but the repair was free thanks to a manufacturing mistake, saving me 700 quid)?

Indeed, has anyone been able to fix this problem by doing something not suggested by Apple (in the above link)?

Finally, if I have to pay for the repair myself, anyone have any idea how much it might cost?

    Cheers in advance,

    W

    Link not working for me.

What happens when you start up in single user mode?

Fixed the link in the OP, there was an extra character at the end.

Happened to me. Turned out my hard drive had failed completely. I replace it myself and it booted up fine.

One thing that I could not understand was the failed hard drive completely stopped the computer from booting, i could not use recovery cd.

I suspect its either a failed hard drive or RAM. Both are user replaceable

Cheers guys. Got it sorted in the end. Don't know too much about Macs or programming. Basically, the HD was fxcked. Brought it to the shop and got it repaired for 140 quid - was really worried it was the end of its life or was gonna cost a fortune.

Yesterday I had the grey screen on start-up of a G5. Tried a few things to no avail. Finally connected to a MBP using firewire target mode. I was able to run Disk Warrior and all is well again. Disk Warrior is FANTASTIC.
