I have recently been offered an internship with a popular business firm in Dublin...absolutely delighted about it!! :D

I will be starting soon when paperwork is sorted out etc. Its for 9 months and will be hugely beneficial for me in the long run and will be valuable work experience.

My girlfriend and myself had originally planned to emmigrate like so many others but now for the foreseeable future we will both be staying here. I am just wondering if anyone knows the situation in terms of holidays while on an internship? Are you entitled to take any sort of break. She is interested in going away maybe for a month in summer sometime. Would I be able to break the intership into a 5 month and 4 month stint for example? Can i ask the company for holiday time or is it solely dependant of the Welfare Department.

I dont mean to sound ungracious but I would like to know I can take some sort of holiday over the summer.

    Any help would be appreciated!

You're entitled to 1.75 holiday days per month on JobBridge, so for a 9 month internship you are allowed 15 days off.

There is the minimum you're entitled to as Anny said. The maximum is purely up to the company. I booked a 3 week holiday when i was on mine and they were fine with it and had other days off here and there too (so over the 15 day entitlement). The welfare will only pay you for 2 weeks holidays so while they'll let you leave for longer you wont get paid for it.

Sorry to be slightly off topic, but I have a question for the OP:

For that Job Bridge internship, was there an interview and what level of experience did the internship company demand?

    Thanks!

@experiMental - Not sure if this'll be of any help to you but I applied for an internship with JobBridge recently. I sent them my CV and went for a fairly quick interview a couple of weeks later (it lasted about 30mins - they asked five or six of the usual interview-type questions about teamwork etc). Heard back from them the next day and got the job, though I haven't actually started it yet.

I just double-checked the original ad and they asked for pretty basic stuff like IT skills, organisation skills, communication skills, and an interest in the specific sector. They also asked for research and writing skills (it's a research job). They didn't mention anything about needing work experience or even a third level qualification, though I can't imagine anyone without a degree would have stood a chance, tbh. I have a Master's in a subject directly related to the field

I have plenty of work experience on my CV, though I do have a couple of gaps where I was unemployed for a few months at a time. I did quite a lot of volunteering while unemployed and they actually commented on that in the interview - said it shows initiative etc, so I think it's really worth doing a bit of that if you can. Anyone applying for JobBridge is going to be unemployed with a gap on their CV so, if you can fill that gap somehow, it'll set you apart straight away. Also, none of my work experience is directly relevant to the internship, which didn't seem to bother them at all. They were more interested in how I used my skills in previous jobs (communication, etc).
