10 Minutes on the N11

Just a quick video of driving on the N11 over the past two days. Nearly all of this occurred with 10 minutes.

Before anyone takes up running a red light "sure nothing is coming" from the other direction, its still running a red light on a what is officially classed a National Road. Its asking to be T-Boned. I make no apologizes for uploading it.

In fairness for those cars turning right....it's fúcking ridiculous that you could be on an empty junction with not a car to be seen and have to wait upto 35 seconds for a light to change. Bollix to that...I'd go too and I'd normally be the most patient of drivers but this gets me riled up.
Why all traffic lights aren't sensored and go green when there's no traffic in the opposing lanes is beyond me..

Assuming it was clear, i'd go there myself. I don't see any danger, and i'm not a believer in obeying laws blindly.

Yawn... I thought something interesting was going to happen. I see way worse on the M50 every day

I always take the right turn if there is nothing coming. What could possibly go wrong when cars are stuck at a 60kph limit.

I do exactly the same thing (turn right on red) at the right turn when travelling outbound and turning right to go up by the Magic Carpet if I'm first at the stop line and there's nothing coming from Cabinteely. There is an unobstructed view of the the inbound N11 all the way down to the junction with Clonkeen Road (Dunnes Stores) so there is zero risk in turning right as long as the 'straight ahead' green arrow is lit which means that no traffic can cross the N11 coming from Cornelscourt.

Even though there are sensors in the inbound lanes, the traffic people don't seem to have a problem leaving traffic intending turning right to Cornelscourt stopped at the red light for an age with no inbound traffic.

On the problem with people turning right and drifting into your lane as happened you at the junction of Fosters Ave., you need to adopt a defensive strategy which is to pick the right lane when you get to the junction or if you're in the left of two lanes turning right, you need to drift momentarily into the bus lane when you turn right, just in case you have an idiot on your right who takes up your lane after the turn.

To all the people saying they turn right on red, do you know the junction well and are you sure there's no pedestrian lights crossing the road you are turning onto?

I was walking home from work a few days back and crossing the n81 at the old bawn road junction from Tallaght village. There's a no u-turn sign at the junction but people assume if they've got an arrow to turn right they can do a u-turn. Nearly ended up in the windscreen of a Mondeo only I saw him coming and ran, reckon he got an awful fright too when he realised.

I do it all the time in Naas.....just before Aldi going right onto the new ring road, nothing coming so I don't see any harm in going.....

I can think of a few places where there is a similar situation where there is a green light to go straight on and a green arrow pointing right to allow you to turn green.

In this situation I take it that a full green means you can turn right but must be cautious as traffic may still be coming against you. When the right hand turn green arrow comes on, you can turn right in the knowledge no car should be coming against you.

I asked my driving instructor years ago about this situation and he told me to turn right but with caution.

In the OPs video. I personally would not turn right in this instance. I can be a bit heavy on the accelerator at times, but I always respect red lights, even in situations where you think you will have a safe drive through a junction. It's just not worth it for being stopped for a few seconds.

My problem with people doing that is most don't seem to check if there's a green pedestrian light on the road they're turning into. My pet hate is people beeping me for not going through a red turning light and then a green pedestrian light. Sod off. Sometimes people drive around me to do so. Bizarre.

Can hardly call yourself patient and then say 'bollox to that' and run a red light?

On the flip side though folks, would you do 80km/h in a 50km/h if you could see ahead? If there was no danger, that YOU could see? Would you go down the wrong way down a one way street, if it took a few seconds off your journey? Possibly at the total inconvenience of someone going the right way?

Thats a text book definition of arrogance.

Who amongst us time is so precious or valuable that they aren't prepared or can't wait 40 to 60 seconds (Max time you have to wait at the lights in question) for them to change?

Thats really what it comes down to, time and how you value it. By going through a red light, which is a 2 point penalty offense by the way, your putting others at danger, regardless of how YOU see it. Your breaking a rule that 99% of other drivers abide. Your doing the unexpected. The beauty of driving in other countries is you can reasonably expect every driver to act the same way, while here there is a blatant disregard for even the most basic rules of the road.

I actually can't believe that people can rationalize breaking a red light, to save maybe 20 seconds on their day, because they "know the junction" or have a clear view.

In the case of the two cars that go through, the second one was maybe only 2 or 3 seconds clear of junction before a car passed. I don't know about you but coming up a junction on the N11 with the light green, and with due caution, I'm not going to expect some clown to break a red. And as for sight lines, you would not have time to clear that junction if an ambulance was coming full tilt. I know that first hand.

Also I appreciate its a boring video. I'll try add some flames and pile ups to keep the kids entertained :pac:

To big a gap between you the the Toyota in the second bunch turning right. bloody hate that I do. Puts cars in the driving lane who want to turn right...

Agree with your principle, but I'm actually much much closer than it looks. The fish eye lens on the DVR causes that perception.

Replace the turn bulb with an amber one, problem solved!

Same with this junction too when turning right at Merrion square.

    Linky

The amount of time i got beeped from ignorant driver behind.. the light indicated to go straight only..

Some drivers out there need to learn how to interpret traffic light seriously..

That's not how those lights should work.

I was under the impression that there are two different types of lights

    1) The one in the above video. Arrow to go straight and red to go right. This means you are not allowed to proceed right until you have a green light on the right hand light

    2) The same lights, but instead of an up (Straight on) arrow, it is a full green circle. This means, if the road is clear, you can turn right

Agree with the above. You don't necesarily have to have a right arrow to turn right. Lights I use off the NCR have a mix of green arrow for st ahead only (pedestrian light green in this mode); full green light for st ahead and right turn (yield to oncoming traffic); and green right arrow only. So basically you can turn right except when st ahead arrow only is displayed showing.
