    Hi, I'm finally selling my old banger and hopefully taking a step on the Audi/Merc ladder. I'm no expert, as you can probably tell from below, so any hints would be great.

    My max overall budget is 10K and I was looking at:

    Audi A3
    Merc C class
    VW Golf
    Any other suggestions

    Max engine size: 1.8
    Max Mileage: 70K
    Years: Audi/Merc for price around 2005/2006/2007?; Golf around 2008(?)
    No problem with manual; 3 door coupe/hatchback preferred. I only do about 5K miles a year on short trips.
    Location: Dublin (will I get a cheaper car with non "D" reg? I'm guessing yes.

    Not too worried about tax/insurance but need advice on running costs and repairs.

    Have you driven all of these cars? If not, i'd start there.

    You say you want to step on to the merc/audi ladder and then mention a Golf.

    Eh am I missing something here?

    My advice is choose a car that suits your needs.

    Do you need petrol/diesel?
    Do you need estate/hatch/saloon?
    Do you need/want cheaper tax?
    Are you really a badge snob? :P
    If you are can you afford the costly repairs that are likely to be associated with the car your are looking at if things do go wrong?
    etc....

    All of these questions will rapidly reduce your searching criteria.
