Medical expenses backdated (medical card)

I applied for a medical card in Sept last year. For whatever reason, my card only arrived in the post yesterday and is valid until Sept of this year.

In the time I was waiting for my card I had to attend my GP once (€50) and get a prescription filled (€69). Is it possible for me to recoup these expenses or is it just my own bad luck that the waiting times for a medical card are ridiculously long?

Their policy is that they will process applications within 15 days, and if you were eligible for the card along, and complied with all their processes, you should not be left with the costs. You MAY have a legal case. You should speak to FLAC to advise fully on this possibility.

If you don't have resources to pursue a legal case, you can complain to the Ombudsman in respect of the breach of policy/maladministration.

Is there a 'valid from' date on the medical card?

Did you get the USC refunded?

I believed that medical holders only pay 4 % rather than the 8%.

Haven't claimed a refund as I didn't realise you could. Do you have more info on this SS? Thanks.

Taken from the citizens information board:

Medical card holders pay the Universal Social Charge on their income (except for social welfare and HSE payments), but at a maximum rate of 4%. The only exemption is for people earning less than €4,004 per annum. They may also be exempt from paying school transport charges, State exam fees in publicly-funded second-level schools. There may also be financial help with buying school books in certain schools.

I'm going through the proccess of applying myself and will be getting every penny I'm entitled to. I believe that we currently pay 8% USC on our salaries.

tell me about it. I first applied in april 2011. I was only told last week after numerous calls etc that the application was cancelled in june of 2011. It's muppets like these that give the entire civil service a bad name.

    Well,

Just got a text last night saying that my medical card has been granted. I re-applied on the 19-1-12 so thats not so bad. I had been ringing them every day. I think that's the ley to it. Someone you get will eventually push the request thorugh.
