Newbie buying shares

I was just looking for some advice on buying shares/stocks for the first time. I've thought about investing in BOI shares, I've been told they should rise a fair bit from what they are now (9c?), but I'm not really convinced. I'm looking to try a small amount that I could afford to lose if something went badly, badly wrong(€1000 or thereabouts) that could give me some sort of reasonable return over short term (6-12 months). I've looked into going to brokers, but their minimum investment amounts are too high. I know Paddy Power do spread betting, but from what I've read that requires a large cash reserve? I'm not looking to make millions here, just try it to see how it works really more than anything else really. Can anyone give some advice here or even recommend decent resources to research this?

I'd suggest looking at the 'How do you buy shares?' sticky at the top of this forum to get started. Couple of things you should realise though, shares can't be relied on to give a reasonable return in the short-term and €1000 is too small an amount to justify buying shares directly, an investment fund might be a better option.

The best advice I can give is not to listen to watercooler rumors on the stockmarket, Im pretty sure those BOI shares are killer.
