Ok, so in 2009 - 2010 my employer was using the wrong PPS number for me. I rectified this in late 2010 / early 2011 but it turned out I had been underpaying tax and owed revenue around €2000. They agreed that I would pay extra tax in 2011, 2012 and 2013 to clear off this balance.

However in 2011 I worked for 4 / 5 months and then left to go for a year traveling, having paid around €1500 in tax. I now want to apply for my P21 for 2011 to claim this tax back. Does anyone know if I will get paid the money for this or if they will use it got clear off the balance of what I owe them?

Unfortunately it will be used against what you owe. If there is anything left over it will be refunded to you.

Thanks. I had hoped it would only be used against the 2011 balance and I'd get the rest of the money.

Yip, unfortunately, any refund you may be due is offset against the total liability, rather than what was put into the individual years.

You have 7 months unused tax credits in 2011 . - As a single person , this works out at approx €1800 .

Therefore , between what you have already paid back in 2011 and this amount , you could be nearly clear when a balancing statement is issued .

This will leave leave you free to return to normal tax credits in 2012 and 2013 . ( some consolation )

Unfortunately what allthedoyles said is not correct, you can not offset unused tax credits in one year against tax due from previous years. Tax credits can only be used against income earned in year of question
