looking for some support

right since this seems to be the most active and diverse im hoping some people here will have open enough minds to consider this.

recently a thread appeared on this site from a girl who is currently in a tough position because of a foolish new rule to do with landloards and tenants who are on social welfare. all she was trying to do was gather some support for her cause, which she has done on facebook and twitter among other sites, with no problem. yet within a day or 2 of looking for support on here, she was banished to the prison forum. she wasnt ramming the message down anyones throat or spamming, nothing of the sort, simply looking for support or at least raise awareness. am i the only one who thinks this was an overreaction or power trip? im half expecting pretty immature and trollish responses here, but im hoping that i can appeal to some of you guys to help me help her out here.

I'm not messing, but if you want support you'll need to tell people exactly what the situation is and how we can help.

There's not much we can do based on your OP.

seriously guys, this is a serious topic. she has been evicted from her place simply because she is on welfare, she paid her rent on time, no problems at all, and she is raising awareness all around about this rule that allows landlords to evict people on the sole grounds that they are on welfare. shes been in touch with minister for housing , and as i said shes raised awareness on other sites and the fm104 phoneshow discussed it the other night, she comes on here to continue her campaign, and gets banned for doing so.

and to those of you posting these nonsensical and immature replies, take a minute to imagine how you would feel if you couldnt find work and then faced losing your home because of that fact. but i know as im typing this im wasting my time appealing to this type of person.

I don't believe for a second a landlord would evict because "she's on welfare". If she pays rent on time and there's no problems, then there has to be more to this. Late night parties perhaps? Drug induced boyfriends knocking at odd hours?? Let's put the tiny violins away a minute and get the real facts?

OP, it's unlikely you'll get much help here in AH... maybe try posting on the State Benefits forum to see if anyone else on SW has been affected by it.

Go into your local city council office, go for an interview, if you're entitled to RAS (rental accommodation scheme) they will cover your rent, if they think you are going to be homeless they will offer this to you.

How on earth would we be able to help her?

I didn't see the thread at all but if she started to post personal details about the landlord or something that would potentially turn into a legal case then it's no wonder it got deleted.

If boards allowed her then surely her landlord would be able to come on and post his side and this site would have no way of telling who was telling the truth. So by insisting that your friend was allowed to post her side you would also have to insist that the landlord gets to post his side. So basically a private spat between two people gets played out on this site.

Now imagine if every single argument about business or tenancy got played out on boards.ie (because if you allow one where do you stop?) - what a boring site it would be.

"Boards.ie - Now ye're discussing private matters that nobody else gives a sh*t about" - what a crap new slogan that'd be.

Also - take it to Feedback. After Hours is hardly the place for this.

Right I call bull**** to her defense... the P.R.T.B. would be so far up this Landlords ass it would not be funny... Tell me I'm wrong as I was a Property manager for four years. The residential tenancies act of 2004 has provisions for this type of eviction... i.e. plain wrong... he would be in court before he knows it...in fact they don't have to take him to court the can make a judgement with out the courts and it's legally binding.

Go to the Gards, get a lawyer, do something that can actually help her instead of moaning on a bloody website on her behalf.

What the f*ck would we be able to do to help her?

How would 'raising awareness' of her situation help her?

All it smacks of is 'hey I feel hard-done by I'm going to talk about this everywhere'.

If she needs advice she should go to Threshold (a fine organisation). If she just wants attention then yeah, Facebook and all that jazz is grand.

Why the f*ck should Boards facilitate her 'appeal'?

And I'm guessing if she was banned then she must have been spamming it all over the place or posting stuff that was potentially libellous.

If she merely wishes to discuss it, get advice etc, I don't think the mods of the Personal Issues or Accommodation & Property forums would have a problem. Or State Benefits as mentioned.
But if it was a rallying cry, "sign my petition" thing, that's not what this site is for.
She wasn't banned to the Prison forum, she was site-banned, but Prison is the place to go to argue your case. The mods there usually give an explanation - what did they say to her?

Im her boyfriend, the situation explained is not 100% accurate, she had to leave her previous place due to unreasonable living conditions(unimaginable mold growing in every direction), this is still under dispute with PRTB as she did not get her deposit back. When trying to get a new place landlords and agents are rejecting viewing purely based on people on rent allowance or rent supplements, they also reject people with disabilities, she provided links to a facebook page and petition to not allow landlords to reject under these terms as its practically a form to discrimination. However boards gave her a warning and eventualy blocked her account for her posts.

Fair play for coming on here but something just does not add up. Why would the PRTB dispute a deposit over mold growing on the walls? That's not classed as a fault the person renting has to be out of pocket for. As for rent allowance, you do understand that the amounts paid are being cut? Does your girlfriend have any source of income or is she relying solely on rent allowance? At the end of the day, the property belongs to the landlord and they are not a charity.

No the dispute is for PRTB to hep get her deposit back which was her own saved money that is not the property of the landlord, but that's a different case

As for her source of income, its not that's in question, its the fact that landlord and agent reject those on any form on fixed supplements, have a look on daft or other property websites, and in the description some of them have in CAPs rent allowance not accepted, and its kinda ridiculous cause it would be unspeakable to have asians not accepted. That is the whole point of the petition. I originally viewed her post that was in the correct section and followed boards guidelines but was removed and she was blocked

Right as an agent for four years I can tell you that:
    1. The landlord has being burned by welfare tenants not paying their top up... thus leaving the landlord with fees from his mortgage company/bank every month and simply does not want to deal with that again.
    2. He is one of the many who in the good times traded up and and now has a second property but simply cannot afford to get behind on his mortgage.
    3. He has every right who he decides to let his property too!
    4. The agent works for the landlord not the tenant...who pays the agent...the landlord!
    5. It has being widely published in print media that the state is to reduce these supplements even further...very soon.
    6. If I had a property to let I'd rather a professional couple who are not there for most of the day with their mates.... increasing wear and tear on the furnishings which I could not afford to replace!

Get over it... if he is a slum lord who does not give a f.uck the PRTB will get him... make no mistake!

Also why aint you helping her out? Why should the state help her?

Rent Allowance has always been at the landlords discretion to accept. There's nothing new about this and I'm pretty sure they are entitled to refuse rent allowance if they wish as its their property. Discriminating against race, and the likelihood of recieving a rent payment each month are 2 very different things I'm afraid. If this is the core of the arguement its not even worth persuing to be honest.

Boards.ie has a policy of not allowing people to canvas for support for petitions and the like.

It's nothing personal (even though anyone who gets their posts deleted always thinks it is).

You're also not allowed post links up to a petition to get Jedward to play at your daughter's birthday party or to a competition that, if they win, would mean your friend, like totally, gets to go snowboarding high in the Rockies where some marketing knob has convinced you a sh*t beer comes from.

As previously stated their is no onus on a landlord to rent to anyone, and they can establish the rules that they wish to operate under. They do not have to accept rent allowance.

Secondly, i have worked with people with disabilities...depending on their disability a standard house simply may not be suitable for them to live in. Simple things like steps or the layout of the kitchen could be an absolute nightmare for them.

I cannot help but feel your girlfriend is making an issue of the disability factor in an effort to get more attention and goodwill towards her campaign...if she thought about it logically for two seconds she would understand why a landlord might clearly state on an advertisement that their property would not be suitable for someone with a disability.

If you invest in a property as a landlord then you have every right to choose who you rent to, the reason landlords in an abundance refuse to deal with RA is because either their property or they themselves get screwed over, you can can argue all you want about it but if it were not true then why else would they refuse tennents based on this criteria?
