I have read the manual and checked the NCT site. I have a simple question, If you pass all parts of the test bar one, is that a fail? Is there any degree of leniency whereby you can pass having failed on one or more parts (as with the driving test)?

No. If you fail one you fail

    Fail is Fail.

Certain items are a fail advisory but you'll still get your cert. Things like the tyre thread being low, but still legal and the advisory is to let you know that although they pass they will need replacing soon.

It's been a while since I did a driving test, but if you do something dangerous isn't it a straight fail? Can never remember what it was and I got a few.

The best thing with the NCT is that they only test the failed item again unlike the driving test.
